Ridley Scott To Direct Film About Deadly Effects Of Concussions In Football Players
Deadline ^ | November 7, 2013 | MIKE FLEMING JR

Posted on 11/10/2013 9:52:04 PM PST by MinorityRepublican

EXCLUSIVE: While Ridley Scott is taking on the massive Moses movie Exodus with Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton, he and producing partner Giannina Facio have been meeting with A-list writers for what he hopes will be the next film he directs. Scott wants to create a drama focusing on the debilitating effects that concussions are having on our sports heroes, and the role that league owners play in allowing it to happen. His plan is to create a morality tale on that issue, much the way that Michael Mann’s The Insider took on the tobacco industry’s complicity in covering up the addictive and cancer-causing effects of cigarette smoking.

Who cares? These players assume the risk of injury in return for millions of dollars in compensation in salaries and endorsements.

NFL isn’t going to dig this at all, I wonder if it ever happens. They would much rather deal with a rotating succession of things like the thug of the week, the name Redskins, or the propensity of their players to indulge in fruity gyrating celebration dances. Anything but the odds of brain injury with a football career into the pros and the ridiculous lack of HGH testing.

You weren’t alone.

Prometheus had more Plotline Holes than a Larry the Cable Guy Movie.

I think my favorite part of Prometheus, and there were so many favorites, was the guy’s reaction to the Alien Snake that was akin to his Girlfriend bringing home a Puppy.

My head hurts just thinking about it.

I have a question for anyone who has had any experience with concussions. If a young adult inexperienced bicycle rider can't stop because he finds the bike has no brakes, falls from the bicycle at speed, and hits his cheekbone right below the eye against the hard plastic cap of a really immovable fence post with sufficient force to split open his face requiring about 9 stitches, what sort of effects could one to expect to see in succeeding months if he has suffered a concussion? I will check my Freeper messages for comments rather than this thread. I would be especially happy to hear from any physicians.

His personality before the accident was friendly, self-controlled, very thankful and appreciative, considerate and polite, even with people he knew to be complete creeps, and hard working. Intellectually, he was very quick, fluent in four languages, could understand complex issues easily, follow arguments, had a good memory, was in the top few students of his high school class every year, was elected class president each year, led different gospel choirs in his refugee camp for years.

Here are some changes I have observed post-accident:
Wears sunglasses a lot since immediately following the accident but never before.

Easily irritable.

Complains a lot.

Stares vacuously for long periods of time.

Responds to his name being called with a visible start, looking around, and saying "huh, wha?"

Is fixated on a single movie he watches again and again and again.

Responds to questions or conversation in ways that are either extremely tangential at best or having some relationship to the topic that could only have a Z-axis orientation, that is, in a WTF could he possibly mean by that?

Responds with pique at being reminded of something by saying, "You should have told me" though the telling was but the latest instance over a long period of time.

Is told to perform a task with a careful explanation of exactly what needs to be done, the order of doing it, and the reason for doing it, then claims later he has done everything only to find that he has done none of it or only some of it, but in a senseless way: ie., Told that he needs to bring his most recent pay stubs covering the previous 30 days, he brings the most recent from two weeks previously and says, when asked for the most recent one, "But here are all these others," referring to paycheck stubs from 2 or 3 months earlier.

Does this same thing two different occasions in a row without, apparently, remembering what had happened the previous time.

Hears something straightforward but interprets it really strangely, (ie, being told that they had to take the AC unit out of the window because the apartment complex won't allow them after a certain week in October and later saying, "Times are hard. Why do you want to take our air conditioner away from us?")

Had some sort of trouble at work and runs off to stay with friends in another state but won't talk about what happened whereas before he had been very forthcoming and trusting and asking for help in figuring things out.

Tells his family it will be cheaper living in the other state and then gets a house costing more than what he paid for his portion of the rent in the state he ran from while still not having started a new job which, though paying a dollar or so more per hour than the job he abandoned, will actually earn him less per week unless he should get a significant amount of overtime.

Personalizing in a very negative manner anything that was done or failed to be done as he had expected it to be done:
• He sends a message on FaceBook and then tells his brother that the intended recipient didn't want to read it when the intended recipient hadn't even been on FaceBook for days to even be aware of it and then found that it was sent in a way that could not be responded to

• Assumes that something promised that had not gotten done had not been done for reasons of ill will by the person promising to do it but without even bothering to make a quick call to ask what had happened

• Tries to make a phone call, doesn't get an answer, then leaves a message saying he guessed the recipient of the call didn't want to talk to him, though it was only because the phone had run out of battery during the night;

• Asks, using a friend's phone, for check stubs to be faxed to him out of state, gives the fax number but is asked right then several times to text the fax number to his brother's phone so it will be available in case the paper copy is lost because those here can't call his phone since it's broken. He doesn't follow through on the text, sits waiting the next day at some agency for the fax to come through--one of the check stubs he has asked for actually residing in his pocket--but not bothering to call to ask what the situation is so the fax number can be obtained again and the fax sent immediately to him there and then later says, "You just didn't want to do it";

• Asks that photos and videos of his dad's funeral be put on his phone, is told that they can't be loaded for some inexplicable reason even through several attempts but that they would all be put on a big flash drive so they can used on any computer and responds by saying, "put the photos on the phone or a cd I WANNA MADE A VIDEO, you lied me," and many other examples of the same thing
Has started making wildly disparate statements about the same things to make things look better than they actually are but says so many different things to so many different people who all know each other and that he knows know each other that it's easy for them to compare notes to see all the discrepancies but he doesn't seem to be aware that they can see all this, ie, he's going to make $9/hour, now it's $10.25/hour, though he hasn't even started working yet. The apartment was going to cost $500/month for 2 bedrooms, but he told someone else a couple of days ago $600/month, but his friend said the same day it was actually $650/ month.

Has suffered significant deterioration of his language skills

Is extremely defensive and denies he could possibly be suffering from a concussion and says, "you're the one with the concussion."

Somehow has gained access to his siblings Facebook accounts where he reads messages mentioning his problems then claims that the messages were forwarded to him by the older brother (who said he would never have done that) and claims that people are saying he is crazy and does so with a certain note of hysteria.

Makes claims about what certain people supposedly have said to each other about him that are obviously false because neither of those people speaks the other's language to be able to communicate what he claims whether as a direct communication by one to the other or as an conversation of the other with a third party but overheard by the one.

Told his elderly mother, younger sister and brother (age 19 and 18), that they had to move to that other state, even though he has been out of work for a month, still has not yet started a job, and will cause his sister to lose her small income she gets for caring for her mother through an elder care program. They didn't want to go. But he brought a bunch of his friends, got a truck, loaded everything from their apartment and drove off with it, leaving his mother and siblings to ride along with his other friends in a car or stay behind with nothing. Friends of the family who are from their same language group who had spoken with them in the day prior to the moving gang arriving, said they all said they did not want to go but felt powerless to do anything and that it looked almost as though they were being kidnapped. I didn't discover this about the mother and sister until after they had left.

Says his brother and sister can go to school in the other state, though his sister needs to get about 2.5 years of classes done to graduate from high school but will have, according to an ESL coordinator working with refugee students in that county, only a single year to do it in the other state because of the county's age limits instead of the two years she has here, and his brother will have a year less time there than here to finish his high school, has been forced to leave in the middle of the semester, and he didn't need to actually go since he didn't live with them here but felt compelled to accompany them because of the older brother (just turned 21 and with only a high school education) telling him what to do thing typical of his culture.
These problems had all been getting more frequent and more pronounced with the passage of time since the accident and have culminated in this sudden move of his family against their wishes. If I had known it was that fence post at the time I took him into the emergency room instead of a tree branch, I would have insisted on an evaluation for concussion and x-rays for fracture of the cheekbone, but later, after I discovered what it was he hit and had seen the beginnings of these differences post-accident, he refused to go in for evaluation, saying, "If there was anything wrong with my brain, I would know it."

After reading about 1/3rd of your long description, I wonder if your friend will get any help under Obamacare. Many of the specialists who would treat your friend will opt out of the medical field rather than be slaves to government run health care.

I had a female friend who got hit in the head with a bat by a rapist. She developed epileptic seizures of the type that did not cause the convulsions but did cause a black out of consciousness. During those periods, she would go into a stare for minutes totally unaware of her surroundings. This prevented her from ever driving a car. She also developed bi-polar manic-depression and had to take lithium, which had nasty side effects. All these things made it difficult to get employment.
