A care worker at a residential home stole three rings off the wedding finger of an 88-year-old woman with severe dementia then sold them on for a fraction of their value.
Sally Murphy, 38, sold the wedding, engagement and eternity rings, valued at £2,250, for just £54 at a pawnshop.
Two weeks earlier, she had stolen her mother's £150 eternity ring while she was in hospital suffering from a suspected heart attack. She sold it for £10.
At Manchester Magistrates Court chairman of the Bench Scott Cowap told Murphy: "To take advantage of people like this is a despicable and disgusting crime. This was a high-level breach of trust."
But the magistrates rejected a prosecution claim that it had been a 'form of disability hate crime'.

This is a common problem in senior care facilities. Both my mom & her sister had jewelry stolen while staying in such a place.
Yes it is. My mother had similar items go ‘missing’. Mother-in-law also.

Is the Judge talking about the thief who stole them or the thief who bought them for such a paltry amount.
agree, it was a problem years ago with my grandparents, I can only imagine it’s much worse and more blatant today.
Whats WORSE is the care they receive!

The latter is worse than the former, in my opinion.
“Two weeks earlier, she had stolen her mother’s £150 eternity ring while she was in hospital suffering from a suspected heart attack. “
So... what are the odds this ‘care’ worker is some form of drug addict?
Our family had that happen several years ago in Indiana. The “worker” (who just so happened to be a minority) stole the wedding band from from our mother (who had late-stage ALS) as our mother just sat there watching. We managed to get the “worker’s” worthless butt fired, but never got the wedding band back. What a subhuman loser.
Guilty.
