I'm surprised that the Postal Service doesn't consider lowering its rates. The Postal Service's rates are already substantially less than UPS or FedEX.

In my area, UPS prices are considerably lower than the post office rates.
I do a fair amount of small carton shipping and I save a couple dollars on each carton by going to my UPS store. And I don't have to wait in line forever like I do at my post office.

As are their service levels. USPS missing commit greater than 18% of the time, whereas UPS and FedEx are in the 99.xx% range.

Actually factoring inflation, it is far cheaper to mail a first class letter via the USPS today than it was when the first postage stamps were issued in 1847.
In 1847 it cost 5 cents to mail a letter less than 500 miles and 10 cents to mail one over 500 miles. In today’s dollars that would be equal to $1.22 and $2.43 respectively.
