UCSC program supports undocumented students

SANTA CRUZ -- Life is a little easier for UC Santa Cruz junior Mireya Mateo, thanks to UCSC Dreamweavers, a volunteer program supporting undocumented students.

Mateo, who is undocumented, said when she started college her financial picture was daunting.

"It would hit me towards the end of the quarter when I had to pay for school, plus midterms and finals," Mateo said. "I couldn't concentrate on my studies and I didn't want to let my parents know I didn't have any money."

What changed the game, said Mateo, was the passage of the California DREAM Act in July 2011, which allowed her to receive around $20,000 in state tuition grants.

Undocumented students, however, are still ineligible for $10,000 of federal funding that goes toward food and housing. Through UCSC Dreamweavers, Mateo receives funding for off-campus housing, and says she no longer worries about money.

Somehow me, my wife, my kids got through college without receiving a $20,000 state tuition grant. Maybe because we were "documented" we weren't offered one.

"Reguerin thinks Americans will look back one day on how undocumented people are treated and feel ashamed."

Don't hold your breath on that one.

I have no documentation to prove I’ve ever attended UCSC or taken a class. Would it be possible for them to just grant me a PhD?

I don’t know. They have a pretty stringent graduate program.

Huey Newton received a bachelor’s degree from University of California, Santa Cruz in 1974. He was enrolled as a graduate student in History of Consciousness at UC Santa Cruz in 1978, when he arranged to take a reading course from famed evolutionary biologist Robert Trivers, while in prison. He and Trivers became close friends. Trivers and Newton published an analysis of the role of flight crew self-deception in the crash of Air Florida Flight 90.

Newton earned a Ph.D. in history of consciousness at the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1980. His doctoral dissertation was entitled War Against the Panthers: A Study of Repression in America

EVERY out of state student should take this crap to the Supreme Court as a civil rights issue. They are denied the low tuition while foreign nationals are given In-State tuition discounts.

Discrimination is live and well in Mexifornia.

Meet the future police in Cali. It's a safe bet that their K-9 unit is going to give a "drug alert" on your rear end, if you are a gringo.

And we know what THAT means. BOHICA, gringos!

But an American citizen, newly dischatrged from the military, who lived in a different state prior to entering the military muts pay out of state resident tuition.

Funny you mentioned K-9 alerting on vehicles. My mother and I were stopped and checked by some officers friendly and had that happen in California. Her car has never even been smoked in, so what could have alerted the dog?

Don, the dogs are a JOKE on the peasants.

Any handler can cause his dog to “alert” on anything.

Yes, they have a real function. A bomb-sniffing dog really could find a bomb in a crowded place and save lives. For sure.

But drug-sniffing dogs used at traffic stops are no more than “Mr. Ed the talking horse” clop-clopping out 2+2=4 on command. These dog handlers have quiet, silent and subtle signals they can communicate to their dog to “alert” on anybody or anything as a justification or “probable cause” for an intensive search.

Supposedly the NM K-9s “alerted” on the seats of the drivers, leading to anal rape under color of “law.” (sic)

This was no more nor less than selecting an unpopular gringo for rape and humiliation, and the K-9 dutifully “alerted” where the handler wanted.

So it doesn’t matter if your car never had a smoker in it, the K-9 could “alert” for dope, bombs or anything else the handler wanted.

It’s like having Mr. Ed the talking horse in a police uniform, it’s a bad, sick joke.
