HHS reports 106,000 have picked health plans through ObamaCare exchanges

The Department of Health and Human Services reported Wednesday that more than 100,000 people have selected a health care plan through the ObamaCare exchanges -- a number that, likely due to widespread website failures, falls far short of the administration's goal.

The administration had originally hoped to sign up a half-million people in the first month of open enrollment. Now more than six weeks into the troubled launch of HealthCare.gov and other state-based exchanges, HHS announced Wednesday that 106,185 people had selected a plan as of Nov. 2. And just 27,000 did so via the federal exchanges.

The announcement had been highly anticipated, as lawmakers have been pressing the administration for weeks on official figures.

To put these awful numbers in perspective, Obamacare needs 2.7 million healthy young people to sign up to make the math work. That is how the Obama administration itself defines "success" for the law. The few people that are signing up are undoubtedly the sickest with preexisting conditions. This is called adverse selection bias and will lead to a death spiral, where premiums rise, causing more healthy people to drop out or not sign up to begin with, causing premiums to rise even more and the whole thing collapses.

But how many of that have actually paid premiums?

This news from FOX does not tell us exactly how many signed up via Medicaid or how many actually PAID.

All we know is 27,000 people signed up via the federally run exchanges. The state-run exchanges, which use different websites, signed up roughly 79,000. More than half of those sign-ups came from California and New York.

"....Fewer than 27,000 people selected a plan through the website, compared with roughly 79,000 who picked a plan.."

Sweet!

I "selected" a crimson Ferrari and "picked" a Gulfstream G650 today.

Feeling pretty good about things right now.

....”Republicans questioned the new enrollment figures and whether they represent people who are shopping for plans, rather than those who have officially signed up for plans and paid for them.

“Given that these early enrollment numbers are inflated to include those just ‘shopping’ for a plan, it is clear that the real truth is even worse than we are being told,” House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., said.

Based on the administration’s own numbers, Camp said, 68,000 people would have to sign up every day to meet the administration’s year-end goal.”....
