Calling city 'unlivable,' Mancow sells Lincoln Park condo

'I think they've done a good job of making the city unlivable for families'

By Bob Goldsborough Special to the Tribune

Calling his decision to leave the city “heartbreaking,” radio host and reality TV star Erich “Mancow” Muller has sold his Lincoln Park condominium and decamped to a house in Wilmette.

Muller, who is a married father of twin school-aged daughters, told Elite Street he’d had enough with city living.

“The schools are awful. I guess I could have had (my daughters) go to public schools, but I don’t want them to be stupid. I drove past Lincoln Park High School every day, and the kids are cursing and yelling and have their hands down each other’s pants," he said. "And then, I was spending $45,000 a year for the (private) British School of Chicago. It was killing me."

Mancow also said there were always homeless people outside his door and street parking he often used was raised from a quarter an hour to $13 an hour.

Lincoln Park is not a suburb, it’s one of the central neighborhoods in the city.

What he’s doing is moving from the nicest neighborhood in the city...and LP is really nice. To Wilmette one of the nicest and wealthiest suburbs just north of Chicago on the lake. There’s no way the cost of living in Wilmette is cheaper then Chicago. I’d bet property taxes in Wilmette are insane.

I got lost driving around Jagoff-town many years ago, and drove for over an hour looking for a 'hood safe enough to ask directions.

Only later did I learn there ain't a "good part of town".

How you get wealth envy out of that I don’t know. I’ve had great apartments in Lincoln Park. I’m there all time. To call it unlivable would be like calling the Garden District in New Orleans unlivable.

Chicago, New York, Jackson Mississippi. If you own real estate here, get out now before the market realizes what is going on.

I was in the same situation once when I was driving repossessed cars back to Michigan from Chicago years ago. I think it was in Oak Park that the gas station owner told me that I wanted to get that Caddy out of here before somebody decides to take it.

Sure LP is nice, but if you follow Second City Cop's blog, you will find that the crime is skyrocketing. Not just any crime, but elements from the 'hood are coming up on public trans. Things have started changing in the last 2-3 years, even the Gold Coast is suffering from racial crime.

I used to live in Boys Town myself.

“I do believe that Chicago real estate today is akin to Detroit real estate a decade or two earlier.”

Not by a long shot, especially not in Lincoln Park.

Well, give it time.
