Rep. Trey Radel, a freshman Republican from Florida, was arrested on Oct. 29 for possession of cocaine in the District of Columbia, according to D.C. Superior Court documents.
Radel, 37, was charged with misdemeanor possession of cocaine in D.C. Superior Court on Tuesday. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
Radel faces a maximum of 180 days in jail, as well as a possible fine up to $1,000.
The U.S. Attorneys office for the District of Columbia declined to comment on Radels arrest or criminal cases.
The Florida Republican is a former journalist, TV anchor and radio talk-show host. He never held elective office before winning his House seat last November.
Radels office did not respond to a request for comment at press time.
The freshman lawmaker represents Floridas 19th district in the southwestern part of the state. The district includes Fort Myers, Naples, and Cape Coral.
I used to listen to him occasionally when he was the host of his own show on 92.5 Fox News - from 5 a.m. - 9 a.m. He resigned to run for office and won. Drew Steele now has that position and has had Trey on his program numerous times. As usual, I’ll wait until the facts come to light. There is way too much judgmental attitudes going around today - so, I’ve learned to hold my fire until I have all the facts.
My Captain Picard gif has brought to mind “Star Trek: Enterprise” character Charles “Trip” Tucker III.
I’d take “Trip” over “Trey” any day. The name “Trey” practically begs for cocaine abuse or insider trading or something like that.
Well, first of all, arrests for “treason, felony or breach of the peace” pretty much is a term of art for criminal arrests. Second, isn’t cocaine possession a felony in the District of Columbia? And third, the privilege against arrest, if applicable, only protects the congressman against being held in prison while Congress is in session, and does not protect against being charged with a crime: the privilege was included in Article I in order to protect against the possibility of having congressmen arrested for civil matters in order to keep them from voting on a bill. Had Radel invoked the privilege, and had it been deemed applicable, he would not have been arrested, but he still would have been cited for his transgression and made to appear before the judge at another time.

Searching for a TV gig no doubt. MSNBC, are you listening?
Well, it is always wise to hold one’s fire until all the facts are in. That being said, unless Politico has decided that it wants to turn over its entire operation to Congressman Radel in a defamation suit, I have to believe that Politico is telling the truth about Radel being arrested for cocaine possession three weeks ago and did not fabricate any court documents. Unfortunately, I can’t think of any innocent explanation for possessing cocaine, and if this was a case of the congressman being framed by the DC Police Department he would have gone public the day after his arrest, not concealed the fact that he was arrested for three weeks and wait for Politico to report it. I hope I’m wrong here, but I think the odds of this whole thing being a misunderstanding are somewhere between slim and none.
Like Rick James once said in classic Chapelle show episode
Cocaine is hellva of drug LOL!
I never once suggested that the cocaine was planted by the police. After reading the article, I have to surmise that he possibly was pulled over for drunk driving. He admitted being an alcoholic. But, I’ll still reserve judgment - heck, it wouldn’t surprise me if half of Congress does illegal drugs. And, these are the people elected to make and pass laws that affect the rest of us. If this is true about Trey - then rehab is a much better solution than jail. He obviously needs help to get dry. And,also it seems that the report is true about him being in possession o cocaine - he admits it in a round about way - so, once again I say - rehab is a better solution - and next I’d like for them to get the dealer.
Radel was trained as an actor and a comedian and performed improvisational work at Second City in Chicago. Radel began his working career as a journalist, working as both an anchor and as a reporter. He interned for CNN at their Headquarters in Atlanta. He then worked for the CBS affiliates in Houston and Chicago. He was a TV and radio talk show host of Daybreak, on WINK-TV & 92.5 Fox News Radio.
He bought the Naples Journal, a community newspaper in Naples, Collier County, Florida, which he reformatted and expanded, later selling the paper to the Daily News. He founded Trey Communications LLC, a conservative media relations firm. The company purchased and sold domain names, including some of a pornographic nature.
He and his wife founded a nonprofit organization called the U.S. Forces Fund, which focuses on helping injured soldiers returning home from abroad.
I’m still trying to figure out what a misdemeanor of
cocaine possession is.
I thought that was a federal rap?
I never heard of Misdemeanor Cocaine possession.
Given that President Obama has the media in the bag, Democrat voters have no principles, and (most importantly) Obama cannot run for reelection, you may be right that he would not resign and that the Senate would not remove him from office (particularly since all it would take to acquit him would be for 34 Senate Democrats to decide that they don’t want to see Joe Biden become president and perhaps become the Democrat frontrunner for 2016). But it would be a big deal if Obama were arrested for cocaine use today, and the House would impeach him if he didn’t resign fairly quickly.
I had never heard of misdemeanor cocaine possession, either. Maybe the DC city council made possession of less than X grams of cocaine a misdemeanor?
I agree with much of what you write, but I also think that, unless Congressman Radel wasn’t really possessing cocaine, he should resign. Of course he should get treatment, and if he gets better and redeems himself he can ask for the people’s trust once again, but I can’t think of any non-selfish reason that Radel might have for staying in office.
Forgot to post how the story is being covered in Naples (it includes quotes from local leaders): http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2013/nov/19/politico-rep-trey-radel-charged-cocaine-possession/?partner=popular
if this guy has to resign why does not Obummer have to resign too. he admitted to using dope too.
I’ll reprint my response from post #29 (to a similar question):
“But you forget that Obama is a *Democrat*.
But seriously, if Obama was caught buying cocaine this week, he wouldnt be able to brush it aside with a I was back in college back then, experimenting.”
Joe Jr. :-]
He is faithful
He is Kind
A better dog you'll nevber find
than my ole dog Trey.
Trey has a drunk's face (as in John Boehner). The fact that the American electorate can no longer spot a loser by just looking at him, does not augur well for our future as a Republic.
As samples of the unwholesome, besides the aforementioned obvious (and I add, personally observed) drunkard Boehner, I offer John McCain, or Bill Clinton, John Kerry, Joe Biden, et al. .... all of whom look like psycho refugees from a drunk tank when seen in un-retouched close-up photos.
I urge all Americans to go sit in the visitors gallery of Congress. On some days it looks like the bar scene from "Star Wars," except older. Hair transplants, wigs, false teeth, obvious plastic surgery, tremors, etc. it makes people wonder if these people are on mind-altering medications at their assisted-living quarters. E.G. Mitch McConnell or Orin Hatch, neither of whom can no longer get an entire sentence straight.
