U.S. says may pull out all troops as Afghan leader holds up deal

Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai has refused to sign a security deal with the United States, the White House said, and Washington may have to resort to the "zero option" of withdrawing all American troops from the strife-torn country next year, as it did in Iraq.

Karzai told U.S. National Security Adviser Susan Rice in Kabul on Monday that the United States must put an immediate end to military raids on Afghan homes and demonstrate its commitment to peace talks before he would sign a bilateral security pact, Karzai's spokesman said.

The White House said Karzai had outlined new conditions in the meeting with Rice and "indicated he is not prepared to sign the (bilateral security agreement) promptly."

"Without a prompt signature, the U.S. would have no choice but to initiate planning for a post-2014 future in which there would be no U.S. or NATO troop presence in Afghanistan," a White House statement quoted Rice as saying.

People inherently understood the need to keep American troops in Europe and Japan after WWII. Perhaps someone, anyone can explain the reason from the American perspective why young Americans must continue to make the ultimate sacrifice in that land dedicated to the customs and values of the 9th century.

personally , I think we need to bring all our ground forces out right away , not the end of next year . Then use long range drones to keep an eye on the whole place , and run air strikes off of carriers or from Diego Garcia if any Taliban concentrations present themselves . We should never let up on the Taliban . They need to be wiped off the face of the earth . Screw collateral damages as well . Get the ground forces out of there so there are no more ROEs on them . Pure air power

I tend to agree with your take. I would add that Karzai is an evil, crooked POS....and good ridance to him.

New foreign relations SOP: give our enemies everything they want, even if not asked for, and that’s our final offer.

America made a huge mistake electing these s#itheads , twice .
We simply cannot afford to let anything like this to EVER happen again .

America needs to be led by warriors , not lawyers .

Saw this headline on NBCnews.com. “US to Karzai : sign deal or troops leave.” Biggest favor Nguyen van Karzai could do for us is NOT sign. And we’ll be sure to not let the door hit us on the way out.

Obama’s plan has always been to turn over Afghanistan back to al Qaeda in Afghanistan, i.e. the Taliban.

a) we don't have any drones that can reach that far;
b) if we're out, what country will give us flyover rights?

The current ROE basically require our troops to be sitting ducks and not respond until fired upon-- that sucks; but turning the whole country back over to al Qaeda sucks more.

You guys all seem to think we can just leave in a fit of pique. That’s sure to produce great results.

American perspective why young Americans must continue to make the ultimate sacrifice in that land dedicated to the customs and values of the 9th century.

If we leave it's probable that China and/or Russia will move in. That means increased tensions with India.

If you think a war between China or Russia and India has no repercussions for us, you're mistaken. You're talking about MORE tensions for us, not less.
