Someone told me to wait until superbowl season, but this sounds more plausible.

if you like 3D go look at a brand that does NOT require electronic transmitter and glasses, you can wear the ones like you get from a 3D movie theatre

the sharp comes with glasses. I think the new version has batteries for the glasses. Do the movie glasses have batteries?

Heh, I still have a Sony 37” Trinitron upstairs in the Loft, but a 27” Samsumg Digital hooked-up to my CommieCast CATV in my uber-fast computer in the kitchen, via Hauppauge Win-7 TV app. Those big screens are beyond my pay-grade and interest. My neighbors all have 72” LCD/LED or better, and I could give a crap. Meh.

And if you're colorblind like many of us, why spend the extra cash on a color TV set, when you can have one in crystal clear black& white!

I went with a 60 over a 55 because the cost differential was small. Same money would get me a good but not excellent 70 incher now.

I am not keeping up with neighbors, actually I don’t have any. Just want to spoil my self. I would like to watch movies and enjoy my old age. Also want to have film dates with friends. And the theatres here have bed bugs, heard it though the authority of the local pest service.

Rule #1: do not under any circumstances use earbuds. Use earphones which cover your entire ear and which use your ear as intended. Earbuds may harm your hearing. This is from a sound engineer.

Avoid theaters and bed bugs, at all costs! Get what you can afford and stay out of those places. Do the viewing at home.

So I need a dvd player and and a blue ray player?

Blu-ray is to DVD what DVD was to CD. The disks all look alike, but a DVD disk can hold a hell of a lot more data than a CD, and a Blu-Ray disk can hold a hell of a lot more data than a DVD. Blu-Ray players/burners can also handle CDs and DVDs.

Vizio is the underdog, but a quality underdog. Costco sells quite a few them.

3D TV are no longer being pushed, it never caught on. You get that feature free from most companies.

Believe Samsung is the top seller at Costco.

I shop at Costco, don’t work there.

I never liked the round screens. I think this was an early wifi ready model:

As others have said, get a Blu-ray player for DVDs and Blu-rays. DVDs are not hi-def; Blu-rays are. Get the biggest TV you can afford and can fit in your room. I have a fairly large TV room, so I have a 60" TV. I could use a 70", but I can't see getting a new one at this time.

Make sure the TV is 1080P and 120 hz at least. It may come with 3D, but you won't see anything in 3D unless your Blu-ray player plays 3D; you have a 3D Blu-ray; and you have 3D glasses. IMO, 3D is not a big deal. The greatest movies ever made were not shot in 3D.

My TV is a Sharp Aquos. It's also a "smart" TV, but I really don't use its "smart" features. I don't use it for streaming either, preferring to use my Roku for that. I got a Sharp because when I got it there as a big sale on my TV at Fry's. Any of the major brands will do. I also had a Mitsubishi DLP, but I do not recommend them.

I have a surround sound set-up for 5.1 high res sound. You will need some sort of receiver to output sound if you want to take advantage of high res sound. You'll probably want some kind of headphone that connects via bluetooth so you won't get tangled up in a headphone cord (I never watch movies with headphones).

As to an "all region" Blu-ray player, I'm not sure you need that now, as you are looking at entry level on home theater. I have an Oppo BDP-93 for which I bought an all-region mod kit. I am into classic films, and British TV shows, and Shakespeare plays that I can only get on regions other than the USA regions (Region 1 for DVD and Region A for Blu-ray are USA regions). For me, all-region play-back is a must. But some people won't need to spend the extra $ for it.

All new tv’s are 3D capable. You’d have to pay extra to not have it.

The biggest issue is whether you use the entire ear according to my sound engineer friends.

I asked him about it after I used earbuds for the first time and noticed a dramatic fall off in my hearing in the high ranges which was temporary. He said that sound engineers never wear them and some operations ban them from the premises.

I am a singer and I am very careful about my hearing but you would have heard the difference too if I had called your attention to it. It scared the heck of me. Very obvious difference.

Most blue rays will play DVDs as well.

For the last four years or so, every Blu Ray I have seen and used not only play regular DVDs but most recent ones improve the images from regular DVDs.

I know that feeling well.
When I retired in 2007 I treated myself to a Sharp Aquos LED for my birthday three months later.
Have enjoyed every minute if it.
