SINGAPORE: Singapore, which has Southeast Asia’s most modern military, said Monday it was acquiring two new submarines from German defence contractor ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. In a statement, the defence ministry said it signed a contract to acquire two “Type 218SG” submarines, which are projected to be delivered in 2020.
It said the deal included a logistics package and a crew training arrangement in Germany, but did not reveal the total cost.
The two new submarines, along with Archer-class submarines purchased from Sweden in 2005 will replace its Challenger-class submarines that were built in the 1960s and acquired by the city-state in the 1990s.
“The replacement submarines will have significantly improved capabilities and be equipped with Air Independent Propulsion Systems,” the ministry said in the statement.
The German firm said the propulsion system significantly increases a submarine’s underwater range, reducing the risk of discovery.
Singapore announced in September it was acquiring an advanced European air defence system to replace its ageing US-made Hawk surface-to-air batteries.
It has set aside Sg$12.34 billion ($9.84 billion) for defence in 2013, up from Sg$11.83 billion in 2012.
Singapore, surrounded by far larger neighbours, has pursued a robust defence strategy since its acrimonious split from Malaysia in 1965.

Just wondering: AFAIK there are 4 classes of submarines with air independent propulsion currently offered by Germany:
Type 212: The original version for the German Navy, operated by Germany and Italy.
Type 214: the export version of the 212, different hull, slightly larger and without some classified technology. Bought by Greece, South Korea, Portugal, Turkey
Dolphin 2 / Super Dolphin: Upgraded longer version of the original Dolphins, now with AIP. Operated by Israel
Type 216: 4,000 ton super-sized version, proposed as a possible Collins-Class replacement for Australia.
So what exactly is a Type 218 submarine?
Does anyone know more?

Here on page 3 the variety of current German submarines on offer is shown. It goes from the 4,000 t Type 216 for Australia's SEA 1000 request down to less than 1,000 t with HDW TASCO (never heard anything about this type before).
The number is not related to the size of submarine. It's just a running type number. It was just coincidence that last submarine types did get bigger.
Singapore already has two big Archer-class submarines. I doubt there is any use for a 4,000 t type 216 submarine except to show the economic strength of Singapore. A rather small Type 210mod would be much more efficient and suitable for the shallow waters around the island. Even a big and fast SSN can't be at two places at once. Also the small crew size of just 15 men better suits a small country.

Or the Type-218 may just be a customised derivative of the Type-214. Given the pretty small size of this order, I doubt Singapore would want to buy a totally new design and pay for its R&D.
I doubt too that it would be the unproven Type 216. Far too much submarine for Singapore but I also think even a Type 214 is big. On the other side the Type 212 just have one diesel engine. With maintenance of German Navy that may work.
Does Singapore need a submarine to launch cruise missiles? Maybe but most of these missiles could also be tube launched.
What might be worth a new type designation is a Type 214 with one big multi purpose horizontal tube like the one proposed on Type 210mod (see picture here: http://www.thyssenkrupp-marinesystems.com/en/hdw-class-210mod.html).
Or Type 216 might be a complete electric boat without a diesel engine.

The name change is not merely to allay suggestions that ThyssenKrupp’s current Type 214 subs were rebranded as “214” sounds like “sure to die” in Cantonese while “218” has a more auspicious “sure to prosper” ring to it.
