The National Security Agency is reportedly collecting almost 5 billion cell phone records a day under a program that monitors and analyses highly personal data about the precise whereabouts of individuals, wherever they travel in the world.
Details of the giant database of location-tracking information, and the sophisticated ways in which the NSA uses the data to establish relationships between people, have been revealed by the Washington Post, which cited documents supplied by whistleblower Edward Snowden and intelligence officials.
The spy agency is said to be tracking the movements of at least hundreds of millions of devices in what amounts to a staggeringly powerful surveillance tool. It means the NSA can, through mobile phones, track individuals anywhere they travel including into private homes or retrace previously traveled journeys.
The data can also be used to study patterns of behaviour to reveal personal information and relationships between different users.
The NSA provided some input into the report, with one senior collection manager, granted permission to speak to the newspaper, admitting the agency is getting vast volumes of location data from around the planet by tapping into cables that connect mobile networks globally.
Civil liberties experts have long said that cell phone location data contains some of the most intrusive information about people in the digital age, leaving a kaleidoscopic footprint of a persons life. Phones transmit location data whenever a phone is turned on, irrespective of whether they are being used to make calls or send text messages and emails.

But couldn’t stop Tsarneav. Even with him posting jihaidi vidies on the internet, and the Russians saying “pssst, he’s a terrorist follower”.
Likewise, they couldn’t stop Major Hassan from his Fort Hood attack, even tough he was in direct email communication with Anwar al-Awlaki.
The answer is simple, this is all aimed at internal counter-revolutionary dissent. And by that, they mean normal Americans.
Use the pay phone.
As I posted on the other thread:
“What, me worry?
My wife and I have 3+ phones. None are registered to a name. I am not in the USSA.”
If one is worried, just do not get a phone or SIM chip with a plan that tracks the number to you.
Have you cyber hugged your NSA dude today?
the Virgin phones and prepaid phones dont have a SIM card in them. Thank you 7-11. Some of our employees have those $14 Virgin phones that are disposable.
“4 the children”
As long as a phone or SIM is not registered to a name, it should be no problem.
When I was living in the US, I was an agent for Bell South Mobility, one could not get a phone or service without having a credit check, but that was when cellular was new.
It was quite an ordeal to get on cellular in those days.
I’m thinking it is time to dismantle the NSA, sell their servers on ebay, and incarcerate everyone who works there.
The data can also be used to study patterns of behaviour to reveal personal information and relationships between different users.
I doubt the data are actually used for anything but keeping huge servers from standing empty and NSA employees from having to work for livings.
Are there any left? I haven’t seen one in years.
Best idea I heard all day.
