Overnight in the woods? Would it be safe to assume that over the course of that night they spent some time in the shadows?

We need to give them amnesty and healthcare. Then there will be no reason to commit these crimes.

Crime: they’re doing it wrong.
The important lesson here is that the clerk, instead of shooting an armed robber, just chased him off, so is directly responsible for that second robbery. Had he even winged him, that second robbery would not have happened.
But he chose not to. And had these robbers been successful with their subsequent robberies, who knows how many innocent people could have been harmed?
Owning a gun is not just about defending yourself, your family and friends. It is a responsibility to defend society.
This could have been much worse for the pregnant woman. Had the clerk shot instead of just delivering a 1-liner he might have saved this woman from a night of terror.
