The White House is stepping up efforts to extend jobless benefits to long-term unemployed Americans, arguing that more than a million people will lose the assistance if it isn't renewed by the end of the month, slowing economic growth.
In a report released Thursday, the White House Council of Economic Advisers and the Labor Department concluded that if Congress allows benefits, to expire 3.6 million people will lose access to the benefits by the end of 2014.
Democrats are pressing for legislation continuing a program in place since 2008 that gives federally paid benefits to jobless people after their 26 weeks of state benefits run out. Republicans in the GOP-controlled House oppose it.

What economic growth?
Welfare stimulates the economy, right? Right?
So, we quit counting them as “unemployed” for statistical unemployment rate purposes but we continue to support them at the public trough......forever I guess to keep them quiet and out of sight. And Obama trumpets about the “recovery”.
You’ll have to ask Nancy.
Entitlements “bought” the 2012 election.
No reason for the Dems to change the strategy now.
Stop farting around and just pay everyone to stay home.
It should be a Constitutional right to not work.
Working causes stress and injuries, and aching backs.
We should just get paid and we should also get free flights to Hawaii like Obama gets.
Just print the damned money , buy the useless Bonds and send out the checks.
Oh Yeah!! and put everybody on Medicare or Medicaid too.
We need 11 million new citizens so that we can put them on unemployment too, Then we’ll need to bring in more illegals to do the jobs they won’t do.
For the effete who believe American won’t do certain jobs I suggest that they watch some of the old ‘Dirty Jobs’ shows, maybe it was cancelled so as not to debunk the myth.
Are these the same unemployed from 2008? Do these unemployed really expect to be getting benefits in 2014 from 2008? Welfare nation indeed.
The economy won’t improve until the practice of paying people to sit on their a$$ ends!
Why, we are in a recovery...I know it must be true because I’ve heard on TV and on the Internet.
In England they call it the dole.
How about 199 weeks of unemployment ?
Send home the invaders and give the jobs to unemployed US citizens. It isn’t rocket science to begin solving the problem.
No - to keep them voting democrat.
...if any would not work, neither should he eat.
