...if even a small fraction of those had technology comparable to ours (or significantly higher) I think we would have detected their radio emissions by now.

Who says they're using radio to communicate? I've long thought that a space faring civilization would develop communication technologies superior to radio. Perhaps using light, or even some phenomena that we're not familiar with yet.

As far as their terrestrial broadcasts, I suspect that the signals are too dispersed to be more than background hiss when they reach us.

There's increasing evidence that subsurface oceans of liquid water are downright common in our solar system, even in bodies as small as Ceres and Enceladus!

Yep. The next several decades are going to be some of the most interesting the history of human exploration. Hope I get to see just a bit of it before I go :-)

Perhaps interspecies communication is more difficult than we think.

We haven't done too well with other earth species. E.g., the work we've done so far with orcas seems to only scratch the surface.

Perhaps so, but surely some of 10,000+ civilizations would use radio.

As far as their terrestrial broadcasts, I suspect that the signals are too dispersed to be more than background hiss when they reach us.

Narrowband radio broadcasts are detectable with current technology at a distance of hundreds of light years or more.

Quantum entanglement, Einstein's spooky action at a distance.

Why would anyone use electromagnetic waves, be they light, RF or x-rays? They are pokey slow and any munchkin with an antenna can tap in for free.

Use entangled pairs, one at the transmitter and one roving. Every subscriber has a half pair hooked up, don't pay you bill and they unplug your half pair from the signal, just like cable TV.

Hyper secure, only your half pair gets that signal.

Instantaneous even across interstellar distances.

See - “The Man Who Changed Everything:
The Life of James Clerk Maxwell”

In 1859, James Clerk Maxwell published his ‘quaternions’ using fields, called garbage by Oliver Heaviside - a self taught mama’s boy.

Heaviside dismissed all but four of Maxwell’s 200 ‘quaternions’ as impossible, changed them from fields to vectors, and from those four come everything we have and know today on electricity and magnetism.

Implicit in Maxwell’s ‘quaternions’ along with the possibility of free energy from the universe, was transitioning from any one point in space to another without the intervening steps, communication between any one point and another - both regardless of time or distance.

Maxwell’s work has been pretty much ignored since the 19th Century.

It could well be that Maxwell’s theories are the Universe’s universal norm, while we on Earth use a rare and antiquated method or communication and travel.

The mind can only recognize what is familiar, so perhaps we - like Heaviside and Maxwell’s fields, cannot see ‘aliens’ or their means of travel for what they are, but instead transpose them into something we can ‘see’: angels, UFOs, ghosts, etc. And then dismiss that meager conclusion as impossible.

Therefore, life and intelligence only arose on Earth, there are no intelligent aliens from other solar systems, travel between solar systems is G-d’s quarantine, and those that believe in aliens are fools who only have beliefs - but know nothing and can be ignored or ridiculed.
