Sowell: Christmas Books
Creators Syndicate ^ | December 10, 2013 | Thomas Sowell

As Christmas approaches, the shopping mall can become a shopping maul. One of the ways of buying gifts for family and friends, without becoming part of a mob scene in the stores, is to shop on the Internet. However, for many kinds of gifts, you want to be able to see it directly, and perhaps handle it, before you part with your hard-earned cash for it.

One gift for which that is unnecessary is a book. Books are ideal Christmas presents from the standpoint of saving wear and tear on the buyer.

There are the traditional coffee table books, featuring marvelous photographs by Ansel Adams or the moving human scenes in the paintings of Norman Rockwell, both of which are very appropriate books for the holiday season. But there are also more serious, or even grim, books that some people will appreciate as they read them in the new year.

One of these latter kinds of books is the recently published "Why We Won't Talk Honestly About Race" by Harry Stein. It is a bracing dose of truth, on a subject where sugarcoated lies have become the norm.

This book says publicly what many people say only privately, whether about affirmative action, Barack Obama or the ongoing obscenity of gross television shows about paternity tests, to determine the father of children born to women whose lifestyle makes it anybody's guess who has fathered their children.

Hopeful signs from the past and the present are also covered, along with honest and insightful people like Bill Cosby and Shelby Steele. But the abuse to which such people have been subjected is a sobering reminder that it is still a struggle to confront racial issues.

I didn’t know Scott Walker had a new book out. Thanks for the info jaz (and Dr. Sowell).

A President Walker is what we need, IMO.

Walker is a major pro-amnesty, open borders guy.

No, thank you.

In the early 80’s i read a book which used the fishing economy story to illustrate what can happen when one person acquires more than others. In this case they expected the person that worked hard and built a net and then fish in reserve for bad fishing days they expected to provide for those who caught nothing. This continued to evolve to a totally government exploitative and dependent society.
Never have been able to locate the book. The one I had was loaned out and didn't return.
Is anyone aware of this book?

It certainly fits our times of taking from those who extend themselves to earn more and using their fruits for the benefits of all society.

My thirteen year old started reading Rush’s book “Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims.” He is completely absorbed in it.

I was also unaware he has a book out and looking forward to reading it.

It was fantastic to see the way he stood his ground with the union thugs and they’re still screaming.

Can see why you’re not griping, I’d love to see some 72 weather.

Night before last low was 13, yesterdays high was 26. Last night low 15 and so far today 25.

I’m too old for this. LOL!

Who is your "perfect" candidate?

Cruz and Palin seem to be the two best we have now.

There doesn’t seem to be a ‘perfect’ candidate.

The important thing to keep in mind is that the MSM is going vilify the living crap out of any remotely conservative candidate. We also (as Reagan said) can’t dismiss someone that agrees with us only 80%.
We need to win both houses and the White House.

A pro-amnesty presidential candidate would kill any chance of future conservative/GOP victories.

Amnesty in that sense is the ‘final’ GOP solution.

Also, the press will play up the GOPe/faux conservative/’moderate’ candidate until he becomes the nominee and *then* savage him.

Cruz is my man as of now.

No, Cruz isn’t great on amnesty, but Walker is horrible on it.

Love Cruz too. He showed great courage standing up to the GOP establishment over O’Care.

But I’ll take ANY of ‘em over She Who Must Not Be Named in 2016. Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Scott Walker, hell I’ll even take Christie over Hillary. Gladly, in a heartbeat.

I hardly ever vote FOR Republicans. I always vote AGAINST Democrats.
