Climate Change Affects Ultrasonic Bat Signals For Better, Worse
National Geographic ^ | December 10, 2013 | By Helen Thompson

Although bats are nocturnal, they’re hardly flying blind. Most bats see with sound thanks to echolocation: They emit ultrasonic calls that bounce back off physical objects in front of them.

Echolocation allows bats to stalk their insect and plant prey and also keeps them from flying into houses, trees, and telephone poles.

But a changing climate could hamper the ability of some bat species to hunt effectively using sound, according to a new study.

"Bats calling at low frequencies will hear echoes from an object further away than bats calling at high frequencies," says study co-author Holger Goerlitz, a biologist at the Max Wanker Institute for Ornithology in Germany.

This effect is vastly exaggerated in this article — and Germany is not going to turn into Malaysia. Moreover, if they shift their habitat a few miles, as the alarmists whined about earlier, this issue goes away.

It is truly amazing how life on Earth managed to survive for hundreds of millions of years without guidance from Climate Change scientists!

I am amazed at how ridiculous of the premise of this kind of study. There is no individual animal on earth that will be affected by what change may occur in the average temperature on the Earth. If any given bat was given a perfect weightless sensor that reported flawless temperature data wherever it went...the data could not be used by itself to know if the average temperature of the earth has gone up or down. Local climates vary over time to a much larger degree than the aggregate average changes, so talking about the effect of the average global temperature is completely and utterly meaningless, silly, and ugh! WTF is this kind of “research” doing using up valuable paper in a respectable journal? The only explanation I can think of is that it science is seriously corrupted by the politics of “global warming”.

How the heck did the bats make it through the last ice age without some knucklehead doing a "study"? Climate change has been occurring since the Earth was formed. These buffoons need to get over it. There is nothing they can do about it.

Bats have existed for millions of years, even before the ice ages, through temperature swings high and low that make the current temps seem moderate and suddenly they’re going to fly into trees? ROTFLOL

Doesn’t the increased air density at lower temperatures enhance sound transmission? Or is there some other effect that I’m missing?

Not to worry, the environazis are working hard to eliminate those pesky wildlife critters through the use of wind farms, solar farms and other “green” technology.

Which explains why all bat species go entirely extinct every 12,000 years, with every interglacial cycle, and then magically re-animate themselves, once the whole planet is a comfy 71 degrees again.

Sound velocity is proportional to absolute temperature.

Here’s a sample explanation.

Sound doesn't carry as well in freezing temperatures.

And bats don't fly around in freezing temperatures. They hibernate during the winter, mainly because there are no insects out flying around for them to eat.
