Custer took a stand because he had nowhere to go. He was going to die whether he surrendered or fought to the end. At least by fighting to the end, he took out as many of the enemy as he could.

I don't see conservatives in a much different position from his, the exception being he wasn't forced to bring along an army full of traitors who shot him in the back every chance they got.

General Custer “had no where to go” because he made impulsive decisions that did not fit the reality of his situation.

IMHO, his greatest mistake was to divide his command before battle, which ensured his defeat.

Compare that strategy with General Sherman’s strategy at Chattanouga. His first move was to GET SUPPLIES for his hungry, surrounded army. His next was to attack. Would that attack have been successful if he had ignored the condition of his troops? I doubt it.
