Sen. Mike Lee has authored a bill to prevent President Obama from using his executive power to push churches and other nonprofit groups to recognize gay marriage.
"It is concerning that we have people in this administration who think that religious liberties are just not that big of a deal," the Utah Republican told the Washington Examiner on Tuesday.
President Obama promised to respect religious liberty in his statement on the Supreme Court's June decision to overturn parts of the Defense of Marriage Act in Windsor v. United States.
"How religious institutions define and consecrate marriage has always been up to those institutions," Obama said.
Lee thinks federal officials could work around that promise by trying to revoke the tax-exempt status of churches that support traditional marriage.
Religious freedom is a foundational principle to our great nation, and its something that Louisianians and folks across the country cherish including the millions of Americans, like myself, who support traditional marriage," Sen. David Vitter, R-La., said of the bill. "But, for a number of reasons, this basic freedom is under attack by the current administration.
Vitter is an original co-sponsor of the bill, along with Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., and Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla.
Even if the Democratic Senate majority opposes the bill, the legislation could have some political significance for the Republicans who have endorsed it already. For instance, Roberts has a primary challenge in the 2014 midterm elections. Vitter is expected to run for governor of his state.

The shadowy cabal of leftists that Hussein fronts for care not a whit about the law.
It will never see the light of day. Reid controls what comes to the floor and he has shown that he is a dictator and will not bring anything to the floor he doesn’t want to.
The gays have ALREADY gone after the churches!

Good for Mike. I see Senate Majority Leader in his future somewhere.
As an aside, if Vitter does end up running for governor next time around, who do we have in Louisiana to replace him. Elbert Guillory is the only one that comes to mind unless Jindal wants to run for senate.
Even if the bill [asses, the Party Secretary would either find a friendly court to override it, or just sign an Executive Order.
FUBO.
It is not discrimination...it is simply being "selective".
This is the line in the sand.
If this is true, and Obama tries and does this, then it’s time to fight.
Who does care about the law anymore? It’s nearly impossible to keep up with what’s belching forth from DC to ensure I’ll somehow be guilty of something.
Will this pass? I appreciate the sentiment but he needs to do something that is going to pass. His poor staff does all this work and his bills never go anywhere. Perhaps when he is Vice President to Santorum, he will have better luck.
Mike Lee, a man of integrity and showing DEFINITE leadership qualities.
Why would you think this will push complacent Americans over the edge. They are cooking us like a pot full of frogs and have been for years turning up the heat slowly.
I appreciate the sentiment —but when Our Government—including the Courts— divorced themselves from the foundation— They ceased to be the ordinance of God. Our duty to maintain them ended when they began to call evil good—and good evil. When the Government said God, the Bible, and Prayer were no longer accepted in the schools—or in the public arena—when they introduced a distorted and misleading understanding of the separation of church and state. They ceased to warrant our support. Mike Lee is, I believe a good man, and of good intent, but Our Government broke trust. I WILL OBEY GOD rather than men. When the Government repents and once again manifests profound reverence for the Supreme Creator of the Universe -when it recognizes and defends the Rights of conscience This will again be One Nation Under God.The sentiments are nice—But I doubt Congress will agree with Mike Lee.And unless our Government agrees with God and the Laws dictated by God ,Himself— What does it matter?—”Don’t mean Nothin”
Another bill that will go no where.
