FDA puts anti-bacterial soaps under scrutiny [Keep the Feds out of my bathroom!]
Chicago Tribune ^ | 12/17/13 | Gregory Karp and Ellen Jean Hirst

After decades of debate, questions may finally be answered about whether anti-bacterial soaps — used daily in homes, schools and elsewhere — are safe. It's an important issue because many health officials say the products offer no benefit over washing with regular soap and water.

The Food and Drug Administration on Monday proposed a rule that would force makers of anti-bacterial hand soaps and body washes to prove with clinical studies that their productsare both safe to use and more effective than regular soap in preventing illness and the spread of infections. If manufacturers can't prove their claims, the products need to be reformulated or relabeled, the FDA said.

I suppose private labs like Consumer Reports, state governments, and that old reliable MARKETPLACE can do a better job than a bunch of bureaucrats--overpaid ones--in D.C.

This story is symptomatic of our problem; what business is it of D.C.’s as to what SOAP we use?

We do NOT need Obama cultists deciding what washes our hands.

Should be easy to prove as long as the study is held to the same standard as that of second hand smoke or global warming studies.

Here’s a story about something that seems good but causes catastrophe. Sweden was the first country to experience polio. Then, polio marched around the globe. Nobody could figure out why. Sweden was a socialist country and it was the first country where the do-gooders had mandated inside flush toilets. Twenty years (one generation) after that milestone was achieved...polio. It turns out that for millions of years we’ve carried polio in our feces. We never suffered from it because we were constantly exposed to dried feces dust containing polio. Then, for an entire generation, no exposure and therefore no immunity.

So, along comes anti-bacterial soap. It kills 98% of the bacteria on your hands. But that’s like killing all the grass and weeds in your yard. You’ll soon have a lawn full of weeds and those weeds will be immune to the poison you’ve used on them.

What could go wrong? (I avoid anti-bacterial scrubs. If you’re not performing surgery, soap is just fine.)

If they can’t kill an industry outright they will just regulate it out of existence. I wonder which donor requested this.

So, was this a result of a lobbyist from P&G or some other soap company that has not bought up all the little soap makers?

I know of a company in Jacksonville that specialized in these type of products, not for everyday consumers, but for medical customers like doctor’s offices and small hospitals. Clorox decided he wanted to sell it to them so they could get into that market.

There has to be something to it. Just find a soap company that does not sell its own version to find out who paid the lobbyist.

They’re already in your bathroom, in case you missed the low capacity toilet.

Just sidelining him would do nothing to slow “him” down. He hasn’t worked a day in his life, it is all the leeches around him that are raining down this crap. There is a reason he only speaks with a teleprompter.

A lot of them have alcohol. It’s offensive to Muslims. It must be banned.

“something that seems good but causes catastrophe”

It was more generally due to improved water sanitation, not just indoor flush toilets.

So while you are correct that polio outbreaks were a horrific side effect of improved sanitation, the reason water sanitation was developed was because of outbreaks of other diseases DUE to poor water sanition, such as cholera.

This is being done in a way to force thousands of small manufacturers out of the market, leaving only (cooperative) multinationals like Procter & Gamble and Unilever to control the entire market.

It seems odd to me that lately it has been hard to tell the left from the right with all the reactionaries and panic-mongers on both sides. It is clear from basic science that this it probably, and even likely. And yet, here we are, finding a conspiracy. Scares me lately.

They’re all thru the house, with lead-free paint, toilets, lightbulbs etc. This isn’t going to end well.

I have heard that argument...seems to be the same one as those warn about the use of antibiotics.

My point is more to the philosophy of whether it ought to be a government mandate....especially a central government as opposed to a local, more accountable government.

There is a legitimate role for government regulation in policing the marketplace and prohibiting harmful substances and products from being sold to consumers as if they are beneficial. In this instance, the chemical triclosan, which is widely used for its anti-bacterial effects, also seems to be an endocrine disruptor in both people and wildlife. Call me old-fashioned, but, even if it takes a federal rule, I prefer that America’s boys and girls develop normally and that as adults their junk be in proper form and fully functional.
