When a client called with questions about applying for insurance under the new health care law, Bay Area insurance agent Simon Chew tried to help.
He used the phone line dedicated for agents to call Covered California, the state's new health insurance marketplace. After a long wait he received a partial answer to a question about calculating income. He eventually got that client's application filed, but in the meantime many more questions from other clients started pouring in, and they haven't stopped.
That's not an unusual experience for Chew or many other insurance agents who are plunging in to help the state enroll hundreds of thousands of people in the new health insurance exchange.
Covered California says it has received 177,000 applications online, and it has no idea how many of those people needed assistance from insurance agents. Covered California spokesman Roy Kennedy maintains that the program has always thought that insurance agents would play an important role in getting applications filed. But insurance agents around the state say their experiences suggest otherwise.

The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Obamacare's goals have nothing to do with health, everything to do with stealth. (Hey, that's a good one - I just made it up!)
It’s obvious that no one knows what’s going on with this new and wonderful insurance. The people who run the show don’t even know what is going on. What a deal!
I like it. Have a cookie.
Locally they were advertising commissions of $70,000 per year. I know, because, just for grins, I applied.
Didn’t get it, was rejected within 6 hours. Don’t know what I would have done if they wanted to interview me.
Well, yes, I do know. It’s hard to ‘sell’ anything, and impossible to sell something you don’t believe in.
The insurance companies will get blamed and go under, and then Obama will use his OFA and LIVs to start the push for single-payer. Republicans will cave, and we'll have totally free, universal health-care that will take care of everyone.
(Cue chanting and holding hands in front of a Mao-inspired Obama poster)
Read the comments section, BTW. Remember, this is coming from San Freaksico. The comments read like reading the comments here.
This has been a marvel to me, and I have been following them for years, yet many still vote the Democratic line.
I have observed that in other papers as well, where the comments are at odds with a liberal article.
Obamacare is not about health, it's about stealth.
The people who control Obama and Pelosi are not concerned about single payer or not single payer. The existence of the health insurance companies no longer matters, the ins. co.’s have been neutered, they will carry on as subservient appendage of the state for decades, without putting up so much as an iota of real resistance.
The real goal is single-provider.
Where all medical professionals are direct government employees, and triage boards and actuarial commissions of unelected bureaucrats decide who gets what if any level of treatment.
