That's right. Control the weapon at all times. It's look like the guy was surprised and instinctively pushed the pistol away. He is damn lucky nobody got shot in that scrum. The last thing you want to do is get into a gun involved wrestling match.

The best handgun disarm is to grab the barrel and twist the gun back against their fingers until the trigger guard breaks the index finger. Pull the gun away with both hands and then give them the Mozambique drill.

Not a ninja. Lol. Just spent a lot of time fencing then learning Thai knife fighting. And some basic long sword work. Good exercise. Swing 5 lbs of 3 1/2 foot metal around in proper form for an hour and you will definitely feel it!

( i do prefer a gun for self defense, but don’t always have one. Almost always have my trusty knife, though. Obvious exceptions apply.)
