Canada high court strikes down all restrictions on prostitution

OTTAWA — The Supreme Court of Canada struck down all current restrictions on prostitution on Friday, including bans on brothels and on street solicitation, declaring the laws were unconstitutional because they violated prostitutes' safety.

The sweeping 9-0 decision will take effect in one year, inviting Parliament to try to come up with some other way to regulate the sex trade if it chooses to do so.

Prostitution is technically legal in Canada but most related activities have been illegal, including living off the avails of someone else's prostitution, but the court found that the provisions were overly broad or grossly disproportionate.

How does banning streetwalkers endanger their safety?!?

Much as did prohibition against alcohol ushered in increases in violence and criminal acts.

Where prostitution is illegal, if a "john" beats up a prostitute, because she was participating in an illegal act, she can't go to the police to report the crime. In effect, she's being victimized a second time, the first by a violent john, the second by the law itself.

Watching the smug Canadians twist themselves into a knot over this is going to be very enjoyable.

Prostitution should be legal. Pimping should carry a death penalty.

Wouldn't YOU want your daughter, mother or any female relative to have that wonderful job?

In post WW-II days, young brothers were pimping their at-home sisters to sailors stepping ashore on liberty.

One of the best things America ever did was the Marshall Plan ... to help defeated Axis contries build-up their economies.

I was there.

What about the rights of decent citizens and their families to not live among degenerates? Civilization and cultures can't exists if decent people can't exclude people that don't abide by morals and mores.

Someone should hire a bunch of prostitutes to hustle tricks in front of the Supreme Court Justice's kid's school.

Not advocating, Red Badger.

Merely posing the question of whether politicians cause greater harm.

Au contrar. There are many johns languishing in jail cells for beating on the tutes.
Legalizing screwing for money won’t change that & there will be many, many more women plying the trade when all legal stigmata are gone.

If there was demand for male brothels, they would exist.

In post WW-II days, young brothers were pimping their at-home sisters to sailors stepping ashore on liberty.

Men/brothers who would do that and women/sisters who would allow themselves to be used like that didn't need ANY excuse, world wars or whatever, for that behavior. They were pimps and whores to begin with.

Americans weren't starving or in life threatening circumstances, so there was NO need for that to be done. The USO was also in full force "over there" and at home.
My father, mother, uncles, aunts and cousins, etc., were all there too and I never, ever heard that before.

Kind of reminds me of when a former nut-case sheriff of San Francisco decided not to enforce the city’s prostitution laws. All of a sudden, just about every decent hotel in the city found itself with a group of prostitutes out in front soliciting every male who was entering or leaving, including those being accompanied by their wife or girl friend.

Guess they looked at the Canadian Parliement and found a contradiction there.

“Canada - 2 years ahead of us on the “final swirl”.”

yes, this has all been driven by radical courts, not politicians directly

gay “marriage” in Canada came from the courts, not politicians voting

what the politicians have done is appoint radical judges, who then impose these radical changes

9-0 vote on the court on this decision… says it all

the Harper gov’t will try some legislative fix - but my guess is it will be a “free vote” that is designed to fail

pray for us, it’s all we have left

Why don’t we have male prostitutes?

Oh, they're all over the streets of Palm Springs and San Francisco -- it's just that they're strictly pork-to-pork.

Don’t lump us all in with some idiot liberals in Ottawa. A lot of us are freedom loving, God fearing strong conservatives.

We’re not all smug there southern brother. There’s many of us who are likely more conservative than the majority of the US.
