The issue right now is quite political. It stopped being a social issue to be left in the hand sof private parties after Bill Clinton became president and began pushing the gay rights agenda for the military.
Nope, it’s still social. The biggest “gay agenda” thing Clinton pulled off was “don’t ask don’t tell”, which 12 years later had become a horrible thing that needed to be repealed immediately... but not in the way you want. Because society had changed, in the 90s gay acceptance had advanced just far enough to let them in the military as long as they were closeted, by the 10s society had mellowed dramatically about it so the politicians following as always bowed to the people and now gays are in without the closet. But neither of those steps happen if the people hadn’t changed.
