They had that option and turned it down in the 1780’s.

Canadian identity is based primarily on their devotion to the notion that they are NOT AMERICANS.

They like our tourist dollars, but they aren't too sure about us.

While parts of the US--the red parts--would make a kinda nice blend with the prairie provinces, you don't really want any part of Quebec. All the Francophones are descended from about 5000 settlers, and they define themselves not only as NOT AMERICAN, but NOT ENGLISH-SPEAKING, EITHER. And not for nothing is British Columbia sometimes referred to as British California. Ontario is not wonderful, either: it's the most developed industrially AND it's socialist.

They're NOT just like us. O, some are true free spirits, but a lot of them would fit right in if transplanted to blue state cesspools of regimentation.

Yes, ask Mark Steyn. And the whiskey is the least of it. The whiskey and beer is perfectly fine. I think they still do that right.

How about trading them New England, New York, Minnesota, Washington, California, and Obama for Stephen Harper?

(They have to take Obama and New England, or the deal is off)

Why on earth would Canada want to give up self determination and let millions of illegal aliens into their country?

There isn't such a thing.

Why not. Their actors come down here to perform then criticize the way we live. If one country they can no longer slam the US.

The provinces of Canada would have to adopt the U.S. Constitution. It will happen.

Great.

Then they can shred our Constitution too.

I suspect that there are aspects of Canadian life that we would not like.

Yeah, like their weather.

It's too cold up there - they would never do it.

Instead, many of the most productive people would move up there.

Nothing to be gained for Canada. They’d have to shoulder their share of our military expenses. Right now we’re defending them for free.

the proposal from the unitednorthamerica site is for each province to become a state.

The would mean the outermost provinces would join the usa.

quebec would go off to la la land (but not be allowed to take the hydro electric plants)

leaving the middle province(s) to think reallly hard.

” and I suspect that there are aspects of Canadian life that we would not like.”

Adding Vancouver and Prince George and their crime would be a deal breaker for me.

We’ve got our own problems.

I rather just give Canada everythig north of the Mason Mixon line and east of the Mississippi.

I'd rather swap our socialists for their capitalists. And then fortify the border.

Oh, goody. MORE consolidation... because giving more and more power and authority to fewer and fewer people has done SO well every other time it has been done. /sarc>

"Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely."
So, of course, we seek to make mega-governments and mega-economies! Brilliant! /sarc>

Without Canada, we have no easy option for those who’ve voluntarily signed a military contract, but don’t have the honor, nor integrity, to actually see it through if the situation goes all shooty and stuff.

We just call them DEMOCRATS.

Actually, I think that it is quite neat that the U. S. and Canada are so similar in many ways, and yet don’t really have any reason to merge. This is the lesson that the Europeans should have learned long ago: you can have good relations with a neighbor, and profitable trade for both, but there is no reason that a political union is necessary.

A bigger country would be more socialist and imperialist. Does Switzerland have to be large to be the best country in Europe? NO! Are the largest the best? It that were true, people would be trying to sneak into Russia.

There is a movement for Nova Scotia to leave Canada and join the U.S., but I don’t think that it is more than this website: http://www.nova.scotia.statehood.20fr.com

We love Canada, but we say, leave them alone!
