US, Canada Should Merge Into One Country
New York Post ^ | October 26, 2013 | Diane Francis

U-S-Eh! No two nations in the world are as integrated, economically and socially, as the United States and Canada. We share geography, values and a gigantic border. Regardless of this close friendship, our two countries are on a slow-motion collision course — with each other and with the rest of the world. In 1987, the two countries signed the Free Trade Agreement (Mexico joined in 1994) but the US-Canada border has become more clogged than ever, hurting trade and tourism. There are heavy regulations, security controls and border police, the result of terrorist threats and extensive drug smuggling from Canada that has forced US officials to deploy drones and set up listening posts. Border problems are also due to neglect. Talks to create joint infrastructure have dragged on for years. An initiative announced in 2011 aimed at creating a two-country security perimeter, by blending police, immigration, customs and anti-terrorist efforts, has still not delivered results. While both countries wrestle with internal political challenges, meanwhile, the economies of the larger world change and flourish.

Absolutely agree 100%. Wouldn't it be great to drive to Alaska without having to go through customs?

Caanadians would not like this suggestion, and I suspect that there are aspects of Canadian life that we would not like.

Not going to happen. I have it on good authority that the merger will take place within most of our lifetimes.

Most likely in July of 2037.

I’d rather just give Canada everythig north of the Mason Dixon line and east of the Mississippi. I need a new keyboard! Or maybe less bourbon.

They have the queen of England on their currency. They would have to get over this first.

Not a bit of it. Both countries are having enough trouble with bilingualism. We don’t need to addd tri-lingualism to the mix.

If something has to give, let it be NAFTA.

There is no freedom of speech right in Canada, nor is there anything like our 2nd Amendment right to bear arms.

Canada and the U.S.A., together at last? I hope not.

The hurdles to incorporating with a former part of the British Empire are higher than most folks would expect.

I’d say Texas and Alberta could merge and become their own country.

The provinces of Canada would have to adopt the U.S. Constitution. It will happen.

Having to give up a down and adding 10 yards to the football field, I don't think would sit well with Americans.

Ha! My friend was dating a Canuck. One day over dinner, I said, "why don't they just take down the border fences and make Canada part of the US?"

She reached across the table and planted a knife in the wood table top near me.

Fortunately, they broke up a few months later.
