Leigh Steinberg, former super agent seeks Hollywood-like comeback from alcoholism

It was a staggering fall.

Leigh Steinberg, once the most powerful agent in the NFL, a man who for so many years always seemed to have the starting quarterback in the Super Bowl, was 61 years old and lying in bed alone in his parents’ room one afternoon after having moved back in with his mother into the house where he grew up in West Los Angeles. He did the only thing that made sense to him on March 20, 2010.

He started drinking a lot of vodka.

Steinberg had evolved from his “One Beer Steinberg” college days at Cal-Berkeley into a full-blown alcoholic. “I grew up in a Jewish family. There wasn’t real alcohol in the home,” he says. “I never saw my parents take a drink.”

That afternoon, however, he says his “best idea was to keep drinking vodka.”

A sad and devastating series of events, he says, had led Steinberg to the booze.

61 is exceptionally old to “become” an alcoholic but certainly conceivable as alcohol for some is truly devastatingly powerful.

Glad for him that he's turned his life around. However, the agent business is greatly changed...Jay Z has stood it on its ear. More rappers are now becoming agents. Andrew Brandt..once was an agent...he gave it up when Ricky Williams asked him to work with Master P. Brandt quit, became an exec with the Packers, and Williams signed the worst contract ever in the history of the NFL. Brandt tells it all here in a two part story..a good read..

i’m in the football business and while i hope he recovers from his drinking and many excess problems Steinberg is known around the league and agent community as a complete tool....

true story; January, 2004- i’m in mobile, Alabama for Senior Bowl practices (as i am every January)....Steinberg brings his newest client, who’s ineligible to play in the Senior Bowl since he’s a junior, Ben Roethlisberger, to meet coaches, general managers and press palms....I’m talking to Steinberg on the sidelines telling him how much I like Roethlisberger and that I realized after he almost beat Ohio State in Columbus as a sophomore in 2002 I knew he was going to be a big time NFL prospect...Steinberg, who’s obviously under some sort of medication is telling me about the process of recruiting Roethlisberger..

“we have similar backgrounds” he says....at this point i expect him to tell me he (Steinberg) went to high school with Ben’s father, he knew his mother growing up, they lived in the same town, etc....Steinberg continues “we’re both eastern european Jews”.. i say to myself “WTF???!!!”..

to this day Roethlisberger’s present agents laugh at the story...

A sad and devastating series of events, he says, had led Steinberg to the booze. He suffered as his father died a long death in 2004 from esophageal cancer, his marriage fell apart in 2006 and ended in divorce, his two sons were diagnosed with visual problems, he lost two homes in Newport Beach to mold after major storms — the roof collapsed on the second one, his $7 million dream house — and he had given away his agent practice to his associates.

business hans’t changed; you get homeboys in the business who want to use their name to recruit black athletes but don’t know the ins and outs and are quickly out the door....Johnny Cochran and his firm were also agents and lasted about three years...

all it takes is one bad contract and buh-bye gay-z
