Threatening lawsuits and protests, opponents are gearing up to fight a decision by Okinawas governor that could pave the way for a new U.S. military base on the southern Japanese island.
U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel welcomed Fridays decision, calling it the most significant milestone so far in a long-running battle to realign U.S. forces in Okinawa.
The new base is designed to reduce the impact of the heavy U.S. military presence in Okinawa by replacing another base in a more congested area, but opponents want the operations moved off Okinawa completely.

Any chance we can get Japanese soldiers to come over here and protect our borders?
Why are we sending troops BACK there now?
President Obama FINALLY ended WWII when he withdrew the troops from Okinawa
Better yet, Rhodesians, Ghurkas, Israelis and South Koreans.
And WHO are the ‘opponents’?? The fact AP left out any definition of them speaks volumes....SOS.
So Futenma will close and Schwab will be expanded.
Troops are gonna love that.
Not.
My late father helped take that place and his reward was being sent there time and time again for a year at a time.
Communists, traditionalists, labor unions and nationalists.
They could give a $#*+ what the troops want.
Guam or Okinawa?

I appreciate his service and did not mind our men being stationed there. Obama closed shop there.
He bragged about “ending” the Iraq war even though we ceased to be at war against Iraq as soon as Saddam was toppled. We fought alongside Iraqis against foreign sponsored Islamic terrorists who were aided and abbetted by those in the media (seeking to run GW Bush out of office).
The Civil War ended in short order but the KKK “insurgency” rose up afterwards causing problems for those trying to reconstruct the South. No one claims that the Civil War lasted 100 years but that’s about when the Klan’s influence fell apart.
I use Japan as an example of something else Obama can take credit for under the same logic.
Guam.
If it wasn't over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor - it was over when we bombed Nagasaki.
The japs that don't like it can FO.
.
yes I know the Germans didn't bomb Pearl Harbor - it's a movie reference
“And WHO are the opponents?? The fact AP left out any definition of them speaks volumes.”
Probably the same communists who raised hell when I was there in ‘65 & ‘66
“Guam.”
No, the island might tip over.
Was there from 60 - 64. Camp Courtney. Married an Okinawan. Brought her to the US. But a year later, I was just a ticket to ride. Divorced in 65.
I was stationed at Kadena AB in the early 70s..the largest USAF baqse in the world..
5,000 air force personal plus dependents and thousands of civil service nationals
at least 3 chapels huge commissary and BX etc a small city..
plus there was a navy base with a larger commissary, a marine base with an airfield and the army had a post and had the only real beach on the island....
which base is going to be closed ???
Way back in 1977 I flew in a Japanese Huey as their liaison with the USMC during “student” protests over the Marines one day closure of a dirt farm track so that artillery could practice firing. The year before a student had managed to sneak into the impact area & climb a tree. He was promptly blown out of th tree by the first barrage, becoming abd instant “hero”, but thankfully not a martyr.
In 1977 there were 700 Japanese police and 800 Okinawan (separate back then) working to prevent a repeat.
As we flew aver the area the pilots suddenly banked and brought the helo into a 30 foot hover. The Japanese SWAT team in the back with me fast roped to the ground then grabbed & cuffed a man. We landed, they threw him in the back and we returned to their base. Over lunch they explained that the guy they snatched was a 35 year old full time Marxist campus agitator.
It looks like not much has changed.
I was on a Nike-Herc site down by White Beach. Loved it there. Hope your life got better after ‘65
