CEDAR HILL –– Throughout his five terms as the city's mayor, Rob Franke has been open about his stepson's battle with addiction. On Tuesday he spoke openly about his stepson's death.

Joshua Slaven, 31, was fatally shot by a homeowner as he broke into a residence located on Stoney Creek Drive around midnight Christmas Eve.

Franke says his stepson of more than 25 years has battled addiction since he was a teenager. Throughout his life, Slaven checked into numerous rehab facilities to treat his heroin addiction. (snip)

"We saw that Josh was on something, and something different," said Franke. "He came back later and said 'please just call the police on me.' He was scared, just different. We didn't let him in the house."

Slaven left the family home and wandered the neighborhood. Blocks away, he broke into a neighbor's home and was shot and killed.

Franke says he doesn't want the man who shot his stepson to feel responsible.

This is the response of a civilized person. I did not see any "he was getting his life on track" comment.

I’d say a permanent cure for the ‘addiction’ was found.

Quotes intentional as Peter Hitchens’s writings in the subject have all but convinced me that addiction as a permanent, measurable, irresistible force is a fallacy.

Cedar Hill is a bedroom community in the DFW Metroplex.

I suspect suicide. B & E in the dead of night in the state of Texas is a suicide mission.

Not letting the stepson in after he asked for help and eventually being killed will haunt the good mayor for the rest of his life...........(”If I had only let him in”)

Put yourself in his shoes.

The only way to get rid of drugs is you shoot anyone selling drugs or transporting drugs…the Chinese way.. the trail is in one week and the shooting is right after the trail

Been there. I wouldn’t have let him in either. Not calling the police was the mistake. The man knew full well what awaited him upon forcing his way into a Texas home in the dead of night.

Maybe not, though he’s probably haunted my many earlier incidents. I have a cousin who everyone in the extended family loved to pieces. She became addicted to meth and crack, turned into a worthless POS crack whore and petty thief who also robbed and fuched over ever relative who tried to help her, including her parents and her brother and sisters.

In order to protect themselves from her, they eventually were forced to ban her from their lives and came to treat her in their hearts and in reality as if she was literally dead. This cousin of mine broke all our hearts, but at some point you have to protect yourself, and realize that if this person wasn’t a relative you’d do everything possible to keep such people out of your lives, or you would end up destroyed too.

In the always exciting southern area of Dallas county. Generally working class to lower middle class, about half black, about a quarter white, rest Mexican and other. Trending the wrong direction (and probably has been since the Supercollider project was cancelled). You find some of the Wycliffe translation folks in the nicer areas.

A pretty area, but not one where you’d want to move.
