Yes one time here in Boston I was getting WEEI sports talk on 850 WEEI and they announced at 2 am they were going off to do work on the transmitter and when they shut off, KOA 850 boomed in. KOA...from Denver!

Fwiw, back when my dad and I did a lot of flying in the Caribbean, there were not many conventional navigation aids. Very few exclusively aviation beacons, so the quick and easy way to navigate was to tune your VOR into a loud AM station.

We crossed the Caicos Deep by tuning into the missionary radio station in Cap Haitien - and by the time we hit north Florida coming back we could pick up WSB and just keep the needle in the middle.
