I wouldn't be surprised if the CORN producers quietly supported the U.S. sugar tariffs, so that real sugar doesn't threaten the HFCS dominance in baked goods and bottled beverages. I completely believe that.

Drive straight west out of Minneapolis about 60 or 70 miles and you will see some of the wealthiest farmers in the world.
They grow sugar beets.
