Relatives feared for the safety of U.S. Army Sgt. Joseph Anderson during each of the three tours of duty the 12-year veteran served in Iraq, worried that warfare in a foreign land would claim his life.
But they had no such anxieties when he arrived home to Marrero two weeks ago on holiday leave -- and were all the more devastated when someone gunned down the 31-year-old father of three in the driveway of a relative's home Wednesday (Jan. 1) night.
"I thought he'd get shot up over there," Anderson's mother, Kathleen Anderson, 57, said. "He came home on leave and got shot."
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office has said a gunman killed Joseph Anderson in the 6100 block Ray Street in Marrero about 9:45 p.m. and then stole his mother's green, 2001 Toyota 4-Runner. Anderson had just dropped off his children, ages 7, 11, and 12, at the home of their maternal grandparents.
A passerby spotted Anderson lying outside in front of the home and knocked on the door. The residents inside told authorities they overheard a loud popping sound, but thought it was just fireworks. The murder was the first in unincorporated Jefferson Parish in 2014.
Sheriff's Office detectives found the 4-Runner Thursday morning about two miles from the scene of the shooting near the corner of Rue Louis Phillippe and Tuskegee Drive in Marrero. No arrests have been made in the case.
Anderson was dropping off his children ahead of his flight back to Maryland, where he worked at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Relatives, including his father, brother, sister, and ex-wife and other in-laws, gathered at his Marrero home, the news of his unexpected death still raw.

I thought the same thing when the story was reported in some detail yesterday. The stolen vehicle was found about a mile away ransacked but not stripped as is usually the case with stolen vehicles that are recovered down here in the swamp state south. The murder happened in a middle class racially mixed area that is a pretty low crime area. Three children and no mention of any mother is another interesting but depressingly not uncommon feature. Casual out of wedlock procreation is far too much the norm here , more than in many areas among white and black, only the Viets seem to still maintain pretty strong traditional family structures.

What bothered me with the article is when the family members were listed: parents, children and siblings. No mention of a wife or EX-wife. Hmmmm.....

This piece mentions the ex-wife, just in passing and not by name. It says that relatives, including his ex-wife, gathered at the home.
And it was at the ex-wife’s parent’s house where this happened.
I suppose it could have been a crime of opportunity, but it seems like a strange place to carjack someone, in a residential neighborhood. However, I must point out that not only did the in-laws not realize shot(s) had been fired, neither did any of their neighbors. I’m assuming this is like most suburban areas, the houses are pretty close together. Can anyone more familiar with guns explain this? Does it imply a silencer was used? If so, is that “normal” car jacking behavior?

What was weird with the carjacking is it was found 2 miles away. That stood out to me as not a normal carjacking.

That was what happened with the car from the car jacking at the NJ Mall before Christmas. Further than 2 miles, but they found the car the next day abandoned in Newark, which is close to the mall.
But I’m pretty sure those car jackers did not intend to kill anyone and I’m sure they were in the oh sh*t we screwed up mode. But maybe that would be true in this case too.
However, the car in the Jersey theft was a very, very high end car, this one sound pretty ordinary. Although I’ve heard thieves do steal every day cars too, not just fancy ones.
Ah, that does explain a lot. Thanks! We had some folks setting off fireworks here at the Jersey Shore too. Pretty far from us, but we could see and hear them. I banged my pot, you gotta make a little noise!
