The California Supreme Court ruled Thursday that an illegal immigrant can join the bar and begin to practice law in that state, granting a major symbolic victory to immigrant rights advocates who say it’s a step on the path to equal treatment in employment law.
Rebuffing the Obama administration’s arguments, the justices unanimously decided in favor of Sergio C. Garcia, an illegal immigrant who was twice brought across the border illegally by his parents, eventually earned a law degree from a California school and has been trying to join the bar for years.
Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye said state legislation signed last year by Gov. Jerry Brown removed the final barriers and Mr. Garcia can be licensed, even though he is not in the country legally

And who better to set me straight than someone who would have to be considered an expert on the enforcement of immigration law? Assistant Homeland Security Secretary John Morton is currently head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. A former federal prosecutor, Morton is no squishy liberal and he doesn’t take lawbreakers lightly. Yet, when I asked him during a recent interview whether illegal immigrants are de facto criminals, he answered: “Not necessarily.” It all depends, he said, on the specific circumstances of any one case. The thing to keep in mind is that the laws governing who is allowed to enter the country and under what circumstances aren’t criminal statutes. “The immigration laws are civil in nature,” Morton said. “There are criminal immigration offenses but mainly they are misdemeanors in most instances, although a lot are serious felonies. For example, if you enter the country on a visa and you overstay your visa, that is a civil but not a criminal offense. There is some overlap. Sometimes you are here unlawfully and you’re also guilty of a crime. But it is not one to one.”
But in an era of same-sex marriage, homosexuality as part of an all-inclusive -equality-mentality running legally amok, having an illegal alien eligible to join the Califronia bar, it's simply six of one, half a dozen of another.
I’ve come to the conclusion, that any longer you have more rights if you’re not a U. S. citizen.
They should had ruled to put him behind bars.
I agree with the sentiment, but I’d rather see him drop-kicked back to his nation of origin, so we don’t have to support him.
Then I too want to be able to practice law and be regarded as an attorney as well. In front of any court I want.

He and his family broke Law #1 the two times they entered the U.S. - why should anyone care about paying any attention to employment laws when it comes to him?

To me it doesn’t make sense to allow a foreign national to argue what the laws in our nation should be.

This is not a case of wacko, out-of-control judges. AFAIK, they are following the law.
It’s a case of a wacko, out-of-control legislature and governor.
US laws do not apply to humans.
Seems ironic that an illegal alien could become an officer of the court, sworn to uphold the law....
