Interesting. I had not thought of Revel in years, until I recently came across the transcript of a Firing Line appearance. His pessimism at the time was due to his conviction that democracy could not prevail against communism because it was too busy criticizing itself to fight (I paraphrase).
We won the battle (Cold War) that Revel thought we would lose, but are losing the broader war for the very same reasons Revel feared. Our culture is unable or unwilling to defend itself. The West is so critical and hating of itself that its enemies don’t really need to exert a great deal of external force. The evil is eating away at us from within.
It doesn’t help the fight against Communism when guys like Revel criticize the Chrisianity that built the west.
