I'll never forget seeing a news report about the Contras where the Anglo reporterette kept saying, "NicarAAAAAAAAgua". My dad and I just looked at each other and laughed.

Now it is common to hear news people pronouncing place names the way locals would instead of the common English (or American pronunciation) such as Neezher for Niger. I'm not sure what they think this accomplishes.

I always thought that those Frito Bandito accents non-Spanish newscasters break into whenever they see a Spanish name or word was silly or pretentious. They never say locations like Berlin or Paris as a native would, but toss in NicarAAAAAAAAgua and suddenly it's like day one of a Berlitz class.
