They did not expect to be trapped in the ice this time of year, so how does this tie in with global warming theories? I’ve heard that the north pole is supposed to be ice free in the next few years because of global warming.

Yep, today is 14 days after the solstice which is the northern hemisphere equivalent of July 5th. The planet is just hotter than a firecracker isn't it?
