Al Qaeda thrives amid power vacuum in Middle East

But for all its echoes, the bloodshed that has engulfed Iraq, Lebanon and Syria in the past two weeks exposes something new and destabilizing: the emergence of a post-American Middle East in which no broker has the power, or the will, to contain the region’s sectarian hatreds.

Amid this vacuum, fanatical Islamists have flourished in Iraq and Syria under the banner of Al Qaeda, as the two countries’ conflicts amplify each other and foster ever-deeper radicalism.

Remember, according to Obama there is no "War on Terror".

"The war on terror, George Bush once declared, "will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped and defeated". But Barack Obama's administration, it appears, has ended it rather more discreetly - via email.

A message sent recently to senior Pentagon staff explains that "this administration prefers to avoid using the term Long War or Global War On Terror (Gwot) ... please pass this on to your speechwriters". Instead, they have been asked to use a bureaucratic phrase that could hardly be further from the fiery rhetoric of the months immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The global war on terror is dead; long live "overseas contingency operations".

Obama administration says goodbye to 'war on terror',March 25, 2009.

And according to this very paper, Al Qaeda had no involvement in Benghazi.

Why is there a power vacuum in the middle east?

I suggest that taking out Egypt, Libya, Syria, and Iraq ends up removing the bishops and knights on a chess board. That leaves a vacuum.

We used to kick ass in wars and had a lot of respect based on fear and then came political rules of engagement and then the muslim in the white house.

Be nice if we let warriors win wars but then again, we need to purge the military of the social experiment crowd its been forced to take in.

Islam is at war against civilization.

And civilization needs to get serious about fighting back.

Aren't there ANY governments functioning there? I got this information from Google. Heck, after being overseas for five years I learned that Google OFTEN knows more than our own government about the middle east and everywhere else.

Egypt: Presidential powers are held by the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt, currently Adly Mansour. That is no big deal. Morsi was only the FIRST elected president. Looks like he'll be the last but that isn't going to affect Egypt. The Egyptians have been around for a long time and have trudged through innumerable wars, conflicts and otherwise useless contretemps.

Lybia: Libya's General National Congress (GNC or Interim legislature) has elected Nouri Abusahmain as its new president and de facto head of state.

Syria: Bashar al-Assad is still in control, I think. That is what Google writes. My husband and I lived in Saudi Arabia (ARAMCO--the Arabia American Oil Company) for five years when Hafiz, Bashar's daddy, was in power. One of the very favorite trips by ARAMCONS was to take the one hour flight to Damascus. FABULOUS shopping!! I bought DAMASK table cloths there...BEAUTIFUL cotton table cloths and matching napkins with FABULOUS embroidery. Damask from Damascus!! Whodda ever thunk?
I also got DEATHLY sick...not from the hot tea I drank but from the water used to wash the cups. I discovered that when I used their bathroom. Yup, they washed the cups in their toilet.

Iraq: Jalal Talabani (Kurdish: جەلال تاڵەبانی Celal Tallebanî, Arabic: جلال طالباني‎ Jalāl ṬālabānÄ is the sixth and current President of Iraq, a leading Kurdish politician. He is the first non-Arab president of Iraq, although Abdul Karim Qasim was of partial Kurdish heritage.
--------------------------------------------

I even learned to read and write a little Arabic. It was invented to put the Koran in a book, rather than keeping it purely oral. It's purely phonetic and not too hard to learn. I read part of the Koran...impossible to digest or figure out. There is A LOT in it from our Old Testament.

There is NO reason to fear the middle east. They have been battling EACH OTHER since the beginning of time and will stop when our good Lord and God decides it so...and not one second sooner.

My previous response was to a question on the power vacuum in the ME.

You need not try to lecture me on leadership, history or politics there. Or on Arabic. Or Islam.

“The war on terror” George Bush once declared, “will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped and defeated”.

Bush was right. Too bad he didn’t take his own advice.

“Bush was right. Too bad he didn’t take his own advice.’

Bush was doing everything in his power during his presidency, but after his term was over it was up to his successor to continue it.

Saddam Hussein should have been left in power to continue to suppress both the terrorists and Iran. The Iraqi invasion was our nation’s biggest blunder ever, foolishly playing into Osama bin-Laden’s strategy to bleed and bankrupt America.

Bush should have blown the bastards off the face of the earth. That was in his power and he knew it was what needed to be done. He said it, so he knew it.
