Get ready for it to feel as cold as MINUS SIXTY! Nation braces for coldest temperatures in 40 YEARS
Mail Online ^ | 4 January 2014 | Various

Experts have warned that Friday's freezing temperatures were simply a warm-up and that this weekend will bring a big chill for 140 million people - almost half the nation - that could prove fatal for the unprepared - and will continue through the winter.

With the Northeast still reeling from the huge storm that dumped as much as two-feet of snow across the region and was responsible for the deaths of 16 people, a new weather system is threatening to bring record low temperatures to the Midwest as a polar vortex barrels over the United States.

'It's the mother lode of cold air,' said Weather Channel coordinating meteorologist Tom Moore. 'On the heels of what will be the coldest air of the season, will be dangerous, life-threatening winds.'

Because of the winds, 'It may feel as cold as negative 50 to negative 60 on Sunday night over sections of the north-central states,' the National Weather Service said to NBC News. 'In those conditions, frost bite sets in on exposed skin within five minutes.'

Moore said that as the freakishly cold weather hits the region, authorities need to act fast to avoid a human catastrophe because of the chill.

'Anybody living out on the streets needs to be rounded up and put into a shelter,' said Moore to MSNBC News.

'The repercussions ... could be deadly, and I'm afraid we're going to see cases like that.'

The temperature predictions are startling: 25 below zero in Fargo, North Dakota, minus 31 in International Falls, Minnesota, and 15 below in Indianapolis and Chicago.

The so-called 'polar vortex' will send cold air piled up at the North Pole down to the U.S., funneling it as far south as the Gulf Coast.

Why can’t we tap into those ‘millions of degrees’ of heat in the center of the Earth that Al Gore told us about?

Temps started going down around the same time we stopped, or at least limited oil drilling.... I see a pattern here.

DRILL BABY DRILL!

I’m in Minnesota. I maybe forced to contribute to the “warming” by leaving my car run all night.

That is the temperature at which propane freezes in it’s tank.

Its not so bad. Now that I’m older I don’t waste much time on winter. I’m kind of an ant. I spend my summer and fall with an eye on making winter easy and try to relax and stay inside.

When I was younger my friends and I proved how tough we were by being out and around in the worst possible weather. However I have got an urge to do some icefishing but I think I’ll wait till the rough stuff passes.

What makes me nuts is the tv news putting some poor reporter outside in this weather just to tell us its cold outside. One station had a reporter drop an egg into the snow to demonstrate how fast the egg could freeze. Are people really that stupid they wouldn't know how cold it is without all this nonsense?

Well, I've personally shared just about everything I know - those things I have either seen, or could verifiably see with my own eyes, mainly - I live in FL by where it is easy to take a boat out to the gulf stream, and literally have watched it changed and muddy and shrink. It's Oct. I'm in shorts, no shirt. When I was a kid, it snowed here, or usually was at least near freezing by now....

Last 5-10, only hotter. 70 degrees above what it should be right now. I can't explain, thnk ur side is wrong.

Seriously.

“They’re doing that in Iceland- most of the power there is geothermal.”

That’s an expensive place to live, but I think that in the capital, they just pay for the upkeep of the thermal works - no heating fuel bill!

It’s too bad that in most of the US, this type of energy is almost impossible to get at, except in the one place where you don’t need it - Hawaii.

I can’t even imagine what -30 feels like, or how anyone functions in freezing conditions like that.

We have to pack it in when it hits 37 because any colder and our fingers go numb. We’ve already blocked out Monday because the daytime high is only going to be about 30.

So at a wind chill of -20, you would lose as much heat (and freeze to death) as fast as at -20 temp with no wind. But at 33 degrees F, no matter the wind chill, ice won’t form.

Perzactly.

My heart goes out to a lot of people who have to face this cold spell.

Thank you. However, one nice thing about colder temps. No one screams, giggles, or points at you when you layer up. But when it gets warm and you deduct layers.. At some point someone is screaming, giggling, pointing and likely calling the cops.

I suspect some people will have problems. I saw an idiot at the gas station tonight putting 5 bucks in his POS in a T-shirt. When he ran in with his nickles, dimes and quarters I asked “where is your jacket?” he said he left it at home. Driving around in this weather on icy roads with 1.5 gallons of gas in your tank with no jacket to speak of is flat out stupid.

If he survives, he’ll be paying our social security.

“than changing the oil in his heavy equipment out in the field when it’s -30 or colder.”

...especially when you have to wait a day for it to drain! I’m changing the oil in the car tomorrow, and I will have to take it out on the road for a bit first...

I wonder what the wind chill would be if you were soaking wet?

I was camping at Lake Oolgah, Oklahoma many years ago. It was a cool Spring day with winds around 30mph. I would guess the actual temperature was around 45, maybe even colder.

I had bought a pair of used Carl Zeiss military binoculars and was sitting at one of the concrete benches looking over the lake. There was only one boat on the lake. I looked closer and it was a sail boat which had turned half over. The sail was in the water and the two people on the overturned boat were soaking.

The boat was also drifting into the dam. There must have been some kind of boom to stop boats from going over but I sure did not see anything. I drove to the front entrance and told the guy there about the boat. He phoned the lake patrol.

I went back and watched and sure enough a power boat with some kind of police sticker came out of a marina and hooked the sailboat and took the two off. I never heard anything more about it but I bet a person, soaking wet, with 30mph wind and 45 degree temps would not last long.

They are predicting it to get maybe down into the high teens or low 20s here in the Florida Panhandle.

It's always amazed me how cold it can get in Florida. I once lived just outside Tampa for a year. I was working a big project and hadn't brought any winter clothes with me because I didn't think I'd need them there.

One day I thought I'd ask my buddy in California to retrieve some winter gear from my storage. You know, just in case. He sent it out, and the very next day the temps sank to near freezing.

Well, for the heads full of mush LIVs under 30 who buy into the AGW propaganda, this is about to be a real wake up call. A cold and literally deadly one at that. Hence it is news. More importantly, the brutal reality will be news that the corrupt Marxist LSM won’t be able to hide (just like the turd that is Obamacare that they keep trying to polish). Why? Because people will feel it personally!
