Get ready for it to feel as cold as MINUS SIXTY! Nation braces for coldest temperatures in 40 YEARS
Mail Online ^ | 4 January 2014 | Various

Experts have warned that Friday's freezing temperatures were simply a warm-up and that this weekend will bring a big chill for 140 million people - almost half the nation - that could prove fatal for the unprepared - and will continue through the winter.

With the Northeast still reeling from the huge storm that dumped as much as two-feet of snow across the region and was responsible for the deaths of 16 people, a new weather system is threatening to bring record low temperatures to the Midwest as a polar vortex barrels over the United States.

'It's the mother lode of cold air,' said Weather Channel coordinating meteorologist Tom Moore. 'On the heels of what will be the coldest air of the season, will be dangerous, life-threatening winds.'

Because of the winds, 'It may feel as cold as negative 50 to negative 60 on Sunday night over sections of the north-central states,' the National Weather Service said to NBC News. 'In those conditions, frost bite sets in on exposed skin within five minutes.'

Moore said that as the freakishly cold weather hits the region, authorities need to act fast to avoid a human catastrophe because of the chill.

'Anybody living out on the streets needs to be rounded up and put into a shelter,' said Moore to MSNBC News.

'The repercussions ... could be deadly, and I'm afraid we're going to see cases like that.'

The temperature predictions are startling: 25 below zero in Fargo, North Dakota, minus 31 in International Falls, Minnesota, and 15 below in Indianapolis and Chicago.

The so-called 'polar vortex' will send cold air piled up at the North Pole down to the U.S., funneling it as far south as the Gulf Coast.

Freakish? Is it really freakish? We’ve had it worse than this. It’s been awhile since it’s been this cold, but I wouldn’t call it freakish. It’s winter in the Midwest.

In the mid 70's, I can remember delivering papers when temps were below zero, without the wind chill. IIRC, one time it lasted about a week, warmed up to almost freezing for a week and then dropped to below zero for almost another week.

I remember in the 80's, puting a heater under my car, a number of times, so that I could start it in the morning.

That’s getting cold enough where block heaters are no longer a luxury.

Now now. You know that the planet is heating up, and that the polar ice caps are melting, so yes, this weather is VERY freakish.

Get up to speed, would'ya?

I had a friend from North Dakota. She came to California because of the cold. Now she hates California for a myriad of reasons. Her mother says that my ex-friend and her Arab husband are going to move out of California and go back to North Dakota. :o)

Hoorah!!!

In Winnipeg they express wind chill in minutes- as in the amount of time it takes for exposed skin to freeze.

That's only wind chill. Stay out of the wind. -10 here right now, anticipated -25 tonight. (Wind chill -50)

Not so bad, unless you are stuck out in it.

I have seen -60 ambient, with a 40 mph wind. That's cold. (-146 wind chill)

Dress in layers, expose as little skin as possible, touch nothing directly (good gloves a must). Do not exert yourself to the point where you are breathing heavily (you can damage your lungs with cold air), and if you don't have to be out in it, stay inside.

If you are wet? A LOT lower. Water carries heat away from a human body 37 times faster than air. So if you are soaked, well, I’m too tired to do the math, but it is not good. (Wind chill is based on a dry body BTW.)

I can’t even imagine what -30 feels like, or how anyone functions in freezing conditions like that.

I can't, either. Here in Orange County, Calif., it's around 60 degrees. The high temps have been flirting with 80 all week and should continue to do so.

Yeah, I knew those guys were miserable. I sort of thought they might come over and thank me for seeing them and calling it in.

Then again, no one may have even told them how they got sighted.

The locations of the temperature sensors the AGW scientists rely on for their alarmist forecasts are one of the biggest open secrets in this whole charade.

I’ve also read that lots of temperature sensor stations that were located in remote rural areas have recently been taken off line.

I’m pretty sure the warmist community is mostly unaware of this.

Yup, I checked the antifreeze in everything in the fleet tonight for proper temp. good thing I did. I had to put my inlaws pickup in the heated garage. -5 on the coolant. Truck would have been an ice cube come morning..

Everything else is good to go at -40 or better. Since I am on call and my car got kicked out of the garage I plugged in the block heater and wished it luck.

That is the temperature at which propane freezes in it’s tank.

Which temperature? Several are mentioned in the article.

You can get used to cold weather if you live in it every winter, but there’s no getting used to -30. LOL.
