The Republican Party has been clobbered in recent elections by a mythical “war on women” largely driven by abortion. Hysteria about a war on women was fueled by a Republican proposal in Virginia’s General Assembly about trans-vaginal ultrasounds before abortions. Conservatives who think people should pay for their own birth control were misrepresented as woman haters. Rush Limbaugh’s inflammatory attack on flaky Sandra Fluke upset superficial people.
Somewhere in the last ten to fifteen years, the Pro-Life movement took a massive detour – for the worse. Pro-Lifers stopped trying to educate the public and persuade people of the very obvious evil of abortion. Or at least the movement greatly pulled back on those efforts. Instead, conservatives in various State legislatures decided to chip away at abortion with a massive barrage of “base hit” incremental laws.
The Washington Examiner reports that 22 States enacted 70 new laws to restrict abortion in 2013, the second ever in one year, A new report from the Guttmacher Institute said that nearly 90 were passed in 2011. Guttmacher said that 205 abortion restrictions were approved over only the past three years, more than the 189 enacted during the previous decade.
There has been a flurry of legislation aimed at regulating abortion clinics, outlawing certain categories of abortion, and placing restrictions on abortion procedures. A few in-your-face legislative proposals in many States have been explicitly designed to set up further court challenges to abortion itself. But trying to challenge Roe v. Wade in courts is ultimately suicidal because there has been no real improvement in the Federal courts to make the outcome any different this time than in 1973.
This new strategy – at least by itself – has been harmful. It has created a backlash against the Pro-Life cause.

Wrong. The pro-life stance is polling higher now than it ever has. This is GOPe propaganda.
Every time the left mentions “war on women”, respond by rebuking the left’s “war on babies”.
The left is trying to distract attention from their diabolical obsession with anal sex and killing babies which both may even supersede their obsession with OPM (other people’s money, aka tax revenue).

If this is such a “failing strategy,” then why is it that so many legislative bodies keep on passing these laws? And why is it that as the laws are passed, the abortion numbers keep going down? I’m sick to death of establishment Republicans who are at least as bad - personally as well as professionally - as the most loathsome of the Democrats.
This is a false "choice"...a false division...a false compartmentalization
The strategy of the pro-life movement from the day of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton should have been electing governors and state legislators who would nullify Roe, Doe, etc.
If the Catholic bishops had taught the actual teaching of the Catholic Church, that would have been the strategy. Every Catholic governor who failed to enforce the existing laws against abortion would have been put on notice that he/she was being excommunicated for obeying the Supreme Court’s unjust decision.
Unfortunately, the Catholic bishops in 1973 were Democrats, not Catholics. This remains largely true today.
In Washington, Cardinal Donald Wuerl insists that pro-abortion politicians are not grave public sinners. That is, he insists that they must be given Communion.
Archbishop Gomez of Los Angeles and other bishops continue to campaign for a larger pro-abortion majority in the U.S. That is, they insist that we need more immigrants—who vote about 70% for abortion.
If the American People ever get rid of legal abortion, it will be without the help of the Catholic bishops.
