And if it were a Polish Vortex, it would no doubt include sausage, pierogies and lots of beer.

1983 Alamo, ND (unofficially) -60F.

1992 Riverton, WY, -54 F

It's been cold before in these parts, it'll be cold again, only we used to do it without all the hype.

This is surprising to me because local weather guy Brian Wilkes (Indiana) was talking about the polar vortex the last time we had a big cold snap in 94.

we used to do it without all the hype.

Statists have made a very adept switch from global warming to climate change. Now any +2 sigma weather aberration is a crisis requiring govt intervention.

I live 35 miles SW of Chicago where it's currently -13 with a wind chill in the -30's to -40's.

We've had weather like this before, we'll have it again.

Last time was between 1989 - 1991 when I lived in my first house. I don't remember the exact year.

Prior to that it was 1985, then 1978, then 1967. (That's as far back as I can go.)

I mean sheesh, the way people are reacting is like this has never happened before. It has.

I hate the cold but love the snow. Its mesmerizing to watch and it forms interesting patterns.

However I think I'll pass on the ice fishing for a few days.

You know cold when it warms up to the single digits. I spent a month in Grand Forks, ND where the high temperature for the month was zero. (1979)

The weather out there is looking like the late '70s/early'80s--just part of the cycle.

Just like when the theory about expansion and contraction of the universe fell apart, they adduced an unobservable quantity of Dark Matter (because the facts MUST fit the theory — not the other way around).
This Vortex may have some quantifiable existence; but its magical powers do not.

Well...from a meteorological stance...this is a pretty dumb article by all involved.

The polar vortex is nothing new and meteorologists long before me (and I've been one going on 27 years) have been trying to figure out when it will get dislodged and pull arctic/Siberian air southward. It's not been "just created this week."

Sometimes its strong and south...and you get these arctic outbreaks. It moves around at varying strengths. The fact someone has never heard of it before says more about them than the vortex. The fact that the media picks it up...well...that's a different story...like "gravitas."

However, if you are a long-time viewer of The Weather Channel (at least when they show weather)...than you have heard of the polar vortex before...if you've paid attention.

Global warming was replaced by climate change so as to relate to any weather condition we may be having at any time.

I remember reading a prediction that this would be a cold winter because sunspot activity has been unusually low. I don't know if the leftists will be able to connect carbon emissions and solar activity, but I wouldn't be surprised if they take a shot at it.
