BEIRUT An eruption of violence in Iraq is threatening to undo much of what U.S. troops appeared to have accomplished before they withdrew, putting the countrys stability on the line and raising the specter of a new civil war in a region already buckling under the strain of the conflict in Syria.
In the western Iraqi province of Anbar, Sunnis are in open revolt against the Shiite-dominated government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Militants affiliated with al-Qaeda have taken advantage of the turmoil to raise their flag over areas from which they had been driven out by American troops, including the powerfully symbolic city of Fallujah, where U.S. forces fought their bloodiest battle since the Vietnam War.

Biden was right.
Bammy’s fault.
It's like an alcoholic -- you have to want to change. No one can do it for you.
My preference #1 -- stay away.
My preference #2 -- punish them with extreme prejudice, from a great distance (NO boots on the ground) until they decide that they very much want to change. Then stand back and see how they do.
The surge worked, but it was dependent upon governmental reforms, which required the U.S. to stay involved.
Obama threw it all away by allowing Iran to have unlimited influence, and Maliki felt free to continue marginalizing Sunnis.
Sad thing is, people will say this proves insurgencies are impossible to beat and the next war will be just like Iraq and Vietnam.
If we stayed involved for another 5-10 years, Iraq would probably turn out to be a self-sufficient secular nation. But at it is right now, it'll be divided into three parts, Kurdistan, Jihadism and a piece of Shiite.
Obama threw it all away by allowing Iran to have unlimited influence, and Maliki felt free to continue marginalizing Sunnis.”
I agree. Obama and his cronies are making a mess out of the Middle East. Al Quida is making a big comeback. Iran's influence is growing bigger every day. Down the road this will not be good for us.
Barbarism is the pinnacle of islamic “civilization” and only they can fix it.
Besides, we broke and we’re tired. Anybody who wants a new war is welcome to go fight it on their own dime. Good luck.
Muslims killing Muslims. Is that so bad? :-)
I disagree. When Obama walked into the door of the white house, the United States was in the process of negotiating a status of force agreement that would have left American troops there as the guarantor of the rights of the Sunnis, the minority. Obama let the negotiations lapse, and withdrew the troops. The Shiite government then turned to Iran. Now the Sunnis are rebelling and Al Qaeda is back.
This isn’t a “new” war.
“Had a brother who was at Khe Sanh
Fighting the North and the Viet Cong.
They’re still there.
He’s all gone.
Born in the USA!
I was born in the USA!
I was born in the USA!
I’m a long gone Daddy in the USA.”
Agreed. “Nation Building”...in Iraq was a stupid and very costly idea.
Saddam Hussain was an excellent (albeit an ‘evil’) counter measure to the evil Iranians. We never should have invaded Iraq.
How many countries have WMDs...with no action from our part?
Republicans are just as ‘knee-jerk’ reactionaries to sending American troops into senseless situations, as Democrats are the opposite.
WHO LOST IRAQ?
So true. Sunni and Shiites have been going at it forever. It will never stop. Okay by me.
Islam demands no harm to other muslims UNLESS....
