Gov. Cuomo proposing to reduce speed limit on interstates in New York

Despite 65MPH being popular among many motorists and the trucking industry, the proposal to lower speed limits along major highways in NY may move in the legislature because of ardent support from Gov. Andrew Cuomo and key members of the State Senate.

I despise Jimmy Carter, but the 55 mph speed limit was imposed under Nixon. Thank you.

This didn’t work under Carter and it won’t work today. Back then, the “incentive” was to not burn so much fuel. As a corollary, the deaths from automobile accidents also fell.

With today’s much more efficient automobiles, the number of miles traversed on the highways is up sharply, but the revenue from gas taxes is proportionately much lower, if figured in constant dollars based on 1978. Reducing the average speed will simply further reduce the revenue from fuel taxes that much more.

Either that, or like Prohibition, this overly oppressive regulation will induce many more people to scorn and flout the law.

Might even stop fastening the seat belt.

Slowdown, hell, they should do a blockade. I remember a few years back when the tax greedy nimrods wanted to tax the tobacco sold by the Seneca Nation whose reservation lies astride the New York Thruway between Buffalo and the border with Pennsylvania. A few stacks of burning tires which shut it down got the message out and put an end to this crap in a hurry.

If the Seneca can do it, then why not us?

Among some other things, I believe that Nixon lowering the speed limits to 55MPH was a huge impetus to the attitude of Americans towards ignoring laws they don’t feel like obeying. The 55 MPH limit made every driver at the time an instant criminal at least once a day when they had to go to work, drive for family business, reunions etc.

Now we all know by this time that the local and state governments took advantage of the speed limit laws to create multiple ‘speed traps’ some of which gained national notoriety through their brazenness.

Oh well... why bother preaching about it anymore. America is screwed, or at least the citizens are. I’m sure the illegals and the muzzies will get a pass somehow.

Give us a link to prove you are right. Until then, stop posting boosheet.

Because there is NOTHING out there saying anything of the sort.

Thank you for playing.

55 is way too fast. He should propose 25 MPH.

God, I kiss the Georgian ground I walk on, and treasure the day I left that Godforsaken state.

Heck make it 10 mph, then everyone will be super safe.

You nailed it.

I-90 in upstate NY is heavily policed. In my experience, it is one of the most heavily policed roads in the country. It is quite safe to drive at 65 mph. Most drivers will still drive at 65 mph, will get caught, and will be fined.

This is a revenue generator.

Walter E. Williams once sarcastically asked why don’t we just have a 5 mph speed limit, think of all the death and destruction that would be avoided. I hope The Governor of NY didn’t read that column !

It will add more than two hours to the ride. Slower traffic means that more cars are on the road at any given time. The increased number of cars will create more traffic snarls.

This is insane. If timed well, that stretch of the NY Thruway from Buffalo to the MA border is a safe, well managed drive.

There is a correlation between the speed limit and the minimum wage. They both need to be set to the same number, with the optimum balance at $25/hour and 25 mph.

Extrapolating, legislating that New Yorkers all drive in reverse should result in a net creation of energy, and net gain of life!

Take Route 20, if the weather allows.

One of the most beautiful roads in the country and probably 1/10 the police force that I-90 has. And it’s free. If I-90 speed limit drops to 55mph, then Route 20 may be quicker.

0 MPH limit would have great benefits to the Agenda 21 program.

Most highways if you drive 65 MPH tractor trailers will run you over. Can’t imagine going slower than that.

Houston is insane.

I thought The LIE was a lot, or the NJTturnpike, Houston makes them look like a drive on the golf course, and in a golf cart.

It’s worse than Dallas, Massachusetts, Rome, Vicenza, But not riyhadh, which is different.

But Houston is absolutely insane. And definitely nothing to brag about.

Oh, those NY scum don’t want motorists to go slower, they just want them to pay more when the cops selectively enforce the law to generate more revenue.
