Debate in Congress next phase of Asian carp battle

The debate over how to protect the Great Lakes from an Asian carp invasion is shifting to Congress now that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has presented options for blocking their path in Chicago waterways.

The Corps released a report Monday with eight potential approaches.

They range from doing nothing new to sealing off Lake Michigan from the carp-infested Mississippi River watershed with dams, which could cost more than $18 billion and take 25 years.

The agency is hosting seven public meetings this month to explain the report and get feedback.

Project manager Dave Wethington said Tuesday that the Corps will need authorization and funding from Congress to take further action.

Environmental groups say the only acceptable option is physically separating the two watersheds, which Chicago-area shipping interests oppose.

Best action? Fully sanitize the system between the Mississippi and Lake Michigan. Run electro-weirs constantly to keep it sanitized into perpetuity.

Really. It ain’t like any rational person that values their personal health will swim or fish-for-sustenance in the Chicago Ship Canal system. All sport fishing should be made illegal, even catch-and-release.

It is a small sport fishery compared to the GL system. Shut it down.

Any plan that takes 25 years won’t work. They need toxins.

How about a $$$ bounty per pound, and pay for the bounty by grinding them up for compost/fertilizer and selling it? Naw, too obvious.

Anything they attempt is doomed to failure. Invariably some liberal idiot, just for the hell of it, will catch some of these Carp and release them into the lake—if they haven’t already.

“Environmental groups say the only acceptable option is physically separating the two watersheds”

Who’s going to tell the Bald Eagles, Ospreys, Raccoons, Mink, Fishers, Otters, and a dozen other birds and animals that transport fish and fish eggs all over the place all day and all night? I’m pretty sure they don’t care.

Grinding up those carp is racis.

Everyone of them is a registered Chicago voter by now. So, honkie, the grind-em-up suggestion is genocide.

Put a bounty on them - even if it’s only $1 fish, that would be a cheaper solution.

If you catch ‘em, kill ‘em.

Fishermen/women would handle the situation, if allowed.

And while they debate .....

How many new roe were lain?
How many times do they multiplicate their numbers?
How many angling archers will it take in one summer to do the job?

And we the people, wait, and wait, and wait .....

Since the fish jump, there should be some way of harvesting them. Someone needs to come up with a system of catching them as a commercial venture.

the simple problem is chicago uses these canals to dump billions of gallons of sewage a year, and as long as the canals are open and used this way, the carp can get into the lake. if they closed the canals this problem would be fixed. but then they’d have to dump their poop somewhere else than shuttling down to the mississippi river via these canals.
