The Telegraph ^ | 07 Jan 2014 | David Millward

Parts of the country which were not victims of the “Polar vortex” that afflicted swathes of the US none the less suffered abnormally chilly weather as US authorities declared it the coldest Jan 7 on record. The lowest temperature was reported at Embarrass, Minnesota, a township of just over 600 people, where the thermometer fell to -35F (-37C). Once the wind chill factor was taken into account, the temperature felt as low as -45F (-43C). On Hawaii the weather station on Mauna Kea, the island’s highest mountain, recorded a temperature of 21F (-6C), and temperatures plummeted at all levels in the southern states of the US mainland. “It’s not unprecedented, but it is unusual,” a spokesman for the US National Weather Service said. “Normally either Florida, Texas or Louisiana stays above freezing.”

I was in Hawaii the week before Christmas. It was 80 degrees... Possibly on some mountain it was below freezing, but I don’t think you can count that...

This is something else; I’m someone who has lived in Michigan all their life and this is unprecedented.

"US weather: all 50 states fall below freezing ..."

..... Very deceptive statement ..... there are a lot of southern states where freezing temps were only found in the mountainous or higher elevation areas.

Yes, it shouldn’t count above a certain elevation. San Diego was 70 today, but if you drive to the mountains, above 5000 feet or so it will get below freezing.

Indeed.

Come on, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are over 13,00 feet. It gets cold up there even on the equator, enough with the hyperbole.

That said, it is dropping into the sixties at night about now down lower, makes for cozy snuggling weather in bed. Daytime is still up to around 80 plus or minus depending on if you are in the sun or not.

no it’s not, or your not that old.

I remember December 23 1990, I had a 1978 mailbu wagon that would not start, I was doing the battery shuffle, crank on it till it was dead, bring it in and charge it on the fast charger (car was out in a parking lot with no outlet) I got frost bite on my left thumb, I can hardly feel a thing since with that thumb. it was -24 out that day in Minneapolis MN.

My work supervisor and her family went to a Bowl game in Florida about a week ago. She said it was 40*F one day.

I went to the Bahamas during Christmas week in 1966 and it was so cold 55*F that I could only dive into the pool and fly out screaming. Never got into the ocean.

Something is going on out there but CNN will never see it.
