U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre, a nine-term Democrat from Robeson County, said Wednesday he would not seek re-election.
The 57-year-old Lumberton native announced he would retire and leave office at the end of his term after almost two decades in office. His decision has caught many people off guard and suddenly creates a wide-open race for the 7th Congressional District, which stretches from southern Hoke County to Wilmington.
“My family and I spent some time together and talking and praying about it over the holidays,” he said, speaking from Washington during a break. “And we came to the conclusion that we were ready for a new chapter in our lives. We’ve been at this for what will be our 18th year, and we’ve had a lot of wonderful things happen for our district.”
Even the NY Slimes is reporting this should be a pick-up for the Republicans.
I seriously doubt this had anything to do with his decision (cackle).
