In 1990, Germany’s bown coal-fired power stations produced almost 171 billion kilowatt hours of power. At the time, many old eastern German plants were still in operation.

It was a situation that the German government wanted to change, with the aim being that of radically reducing the output of the CO₂-polluting lignite plants, but that’s not happening. In 2013, it rose to 162 billion kilowatt hours, the highest level since reunification in 1990, according to preliminary figures from AGEB, a collection of industry associations and research institutes. Power output from anthracite coal also rose, by eight billion kilowatt hours to over 124 billion, while output from gas-fired plants fell by 10 billion to 66 billion. That means that coal plants are making up for the bulk of the energy production lost due to the 2011 shutdown of eight nuclear plants, while gas plants, which emit less CO₂ but are more expensive to run, are barely profitable at present. …

Yes, they apparently have several anthracite mines. Before the whole Fukushima kerfuffle that made the “public” (was it really them?) call for closing the nuke plants, the government had plans to shut down all of the anthracite mines by 2018.

Greenie Krauts shuting down nuke power plants due to the Jap plant hit by a Tsumami that is very unlikely to occur near the majority of german nuke power plants. Now the Krauts can kill their own people by having them freeze in the winter due to electrical shortages that can produce heat in houses.

Uber science facts not understandable to the first-grade level progressives:

1. Coal works and is comparatively cheap.
2. Nuclear works, and is a bit more expensive.
3. Hydroelectric works, and price depends on location.
4. Solar does not work consistently and is tres expensive.
5. Wind does not work consistently and is even more expensive.
6. Science is hard and progressives should stick to something they know...such as....er....uh....

Anthracite is the ultimately mature coal, that is, it appears to have been below ground for the longest time with the greatest pressure. The volatile mater (gas) is the lowest of known coals at around 5 or 6 percent, compared to 30-36 percent for steam coal from the Illinois Basin.
BTUs are higher because it contains a higher content of carbon.
