5th Beating Reported In LoDo On New Year’s Day (Denver)
CBS Denver ^ | January 8, 2014 | CBS4

Posted on 01/09/2014 8:18:01 AM PST by dsc

Another victim in what could be a string of random attacks on New Year’s Eve in LoDo has come forward, making it a total of five beatings that police are investigating.

The random attacks have been happening near 16th and Blake and 20th and Market. The incidents could be part a violent game called the “Knockout Game” where a person is sucker punched for no reason.

Now another man has come forward claiming he was beaten early New Year’s Day.

After seeing the reports about the beatings on CBS4, Kevin Wagley came forward because he believes he is a victim of the “Knock Out Game.”

The victims from LoDo say they were approached by complete strangers, had no altercations that would lead up to a situation, and that they were random attacks.

Wagley said he was tying his shoe with his leg propped up on a planter when someone clocked him in the face and ran off.

“They didn’t rob me, they literally just hit me in the face and took off running,” said Wagley. “It’s just shocking. I never thought the knock out game would reach Denver.”

Wagley said he was attacked at 2:30 a.m. New Year’s Day. He was outside his hotel at 19th and Champa tying his shoe when he was punched. His attackers ran away.

Police say at least four people were assaulted in three separate attacks. One occurred at 16th Street and Blake Street and two between Larimer and Market streets on 20th.

Police won’t confirm if the assaults are being considered the “Knock Out Game” but they are concerned about the similarities. Officers are looking for surveillance video from businesses near where the attacks happened so they can identify the suspects.

Wagley just wants them caught, “Man up…turn yourself in…be a better human being.”

“LoDo?”

Had to look it up myself. Apparently it’s cutsie-pie speak for “lower downtown.” Last time I was there, about four years ago, I found it advisable to take my knife from my pocket and give a thug “the look.”

I was driving trucks, so no gun.

The better part of self defense is avoiding situations where it becomes necessary...Having said that...

A public setting like a city street favors the predator, and makes this a difficult situation for his potential prey...

The predator can decide if conditions favor him and his plan or not...If not, the predator can just move on...”Hey, I’m just walking here!”...

Put some space between yourself and them...Seek groups of people, duck into a bar, or enter an open business...If nothing is open...

Change directions, cross the street; if they move to intercept, their intentions are now known...

You could warn: “That’s close enough...What do you want?” Draw attention to the situation if others are around...

Don’t worry about making a scene...Better thought crazy than be hospitalized or dead...Fists and feet are lethal weapons...

Once you see or perceive a threat, do not allow them to close distance with you, and definitely not within arms reach...

Making a show of unzipping or blading your body may discourage, but only you can decide in the moment if you should run, or will need to draw and point in at the threat...

Hopefully, you do not go about unarmed, and especially after dark in deserted areas?

Get some firearms training and carry...

I was a Denver firefighter for 35 years...

You are correct about the term LODO being cutsie-poo urban progressive-speak for lower downtown...

What is now “LODO” was a skid row area until redevelopment began about 30 years ago...

It’s now higher end shops, bars, restaurants and apartment/condo, mixed occupancy area favored by the urban chic and hipster set...

Sales tax/cash generator for the city of Denver, so the powers that be hush-hush the trouble that brews there...

Can be a fun area during the day, but also problematic after dark, after ball games, weekends, any time or where alcohol fueled crowds congregate...

Always and everywhere I can legally carry...

Any place my gun is not welcome does not get my business...

The only place I voluntarily did not carry in the last year is when I accompanied a family member to court...Otherwise, constant companion...

They wanna play Knockout? I’ll play Glockout...

Usually I am armed and I try to maintain situational awareness. Further, I don't go walking through dark alleys late a night. But, as noted above, I do like to go to pro basketball games and usually park 5 or 6 blocks away from the stadium. When walking back to the car, after getting about three block from the stadium the streets are pretty sparse. They are lit well enough but would still make a good ambush spot for hit and run bad guys. I think your suggestions were excellent and are exactly what I had always figured I would do in that situation. Crossing the street I consider the best idea and you're right that you shouldn't worry about hurting anyone's feelings by doing so.

We know the attackers are all Black, from other reports from this day and time. We suspect that all of the victims are White.

How is this "random"? It's racial hate-crime and ethnic intimidation in it's most basic form. The DOJ has shown its contempt for White Americans by its failure to take up this epidemic of black-on-white crime.

The media are co-conspirators by continuing to report these as "random".

Alternate lead:

The coordinated national crime wave of unprovoked and savage black on white attacks, often on the elderly, came to Denver early this year. In a string of beatings on New Years Eve whites were attacked by roaving Black mobs.

I can’t imagine that that is true—but I will ask my cop friend.

I’m armed at all times——

If I find out anything, I’ll let you know.

Honest question:

If I am packing, am sucker-punched, and shoot the perp as they are running away, will I be Zimmermanned?

Actually, it was Westlake Hills, not Lakeway. It was on KLBJ this morning. Heard about it on their station just after lunch today again.

Some of those things you mentioned would work

As a rule I do not approach strangers...nor let them get close to me. I get quite agitated close to strangers...and they tend to back off

I stopped by the police station and they told me it wasn’t true. They didn’t mention Westlake Hills, though.

The English language is rich in words, but most writers lack the vocabulary to know how to express a thought properly.

Here, the reader is invited to make "unjustified" synonymous with "random." I am 100% certain the attack was not "random," not even if there was only one, and not a cluster of them. The attacker chose the victim with deliberation, judging size, skin color, and perceived strength.

Then you get to the legal threshold for affixing a label, like "hate crime" or "racially motivated." If the attacked refuses to attack a black skinned person, and chooses victims at least in part based on skin color, that is not enough to label the attack "racially motivated," as a matter of law. So, readers get all sorts of "no sign this was racially motivated," even when the attackers NEVER select a person of like skin color.

Word games played by idiots.
