280 remote islands to be nationalized (Japan)
Yomiuri Shimbun-Japan News ^ | 1/9/2014 | Unattributed

The government will nationalize about 280 islands whose ownership is unknown out of the about 400 remote islands that serve as markers for determining Japan’s territorial waters, the state minister for oceanic policy and territorial issues has announced.

Under the plan, announced Tuesday, the government will complete its search for the islands’ owners by June. Islands whose owners have not been tracked down by then will be registered on the national asset ledger.

The move aims to clarify the government’s intention to protect territories and territorial waters by designating remote islands as “important national territories,” and to reinforce the management of marine resources and national security.

The search for owners was started in August last year by the Headquarters for Ocean Policy, led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. About 50 of the islands are inhabited and about 350 uninhabited. Owners of about 70 uninhabited islands have been tracked down. However, it remains unknown whether 280 islands have owners.

The Civil Code stipulates that land with no owner will be attributed to state coffers.

“Registering [remote islands] as Japan’s national assets would send a message that we intend to strengthen management of them,” Ichita Yamamoto, the state minister for oceanic policy and territorial issues, said at a press conference. “The government must accurately grasp the state of these remote islands.”

This is cool to me.

I doubt China is interested. They don't want to work for anything.

A response to China’s recent bullying, defining exactly what is Japanese territory.

Precisely. The article does not say if any of the soon-to-be nationalized islands lie in China's new self-declared “security zone,” but one suspects that that is indeed the case.

TOKYO: Japan scrambled fighter jets on Tuesday to head off a Chinese government plane flying towards disputed islands in the East China Sea, Tokyo’s defence ministry said.

It is the first such incident to be announced by the ministry since China created its new air defence identification zone (ADIZ) in November last year, which has stoked tensions in the region.

The Chinese Y-12 propeller plane flew into Japan’s own ADIZ, about 160-km from airspace around the Tokyo-controlled Senkakus, which Beijing claims as the Diaoyus, the ministry said. The aircraft headed back towards China without entering disputed airspace after Japan’s military planes became airborne, a defence official said, without confirming further details.(January 8, 2014)

Japan should take inventory on what is and is not theirs. After a complete update, they can consider moving the remaining population from the Fukushima provinces, that are still aglow with dangerous radiation nobody wants to talk about.

A while ago, Japan tried to take one of our islands, by the name of Midway. Didn't go too well for them.

Of course, they should have just waited until now. I'm sure Obama would just hand it right over to them, and thank them for taking it off our hands.

If China asserts a claim to any of the islands in question, I'm not so sure they'll be as accommodating as our Capitulator In Chief would be.

The governments? That makes sense.

OTOH, the Chinese people have been very open to Christianity, unlike the Japanese, who have been notoriously difficult to evangelize.
