Hagel makes rare visit to nuke missile base

Hoping to boost sagging morale, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel made a rare visit Thursday to an Air Force nuclear missile base and the men and women who operate and safeguard the nation's Minuteman 3 missiles. But his attempt to cheer the troops was tempered by news that launch officers at another base had been implicated in an illegal-narcotics investigation....

Two officers at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana are being investigated for allegations of drug possession, said Lt. Col. Brett Ashworth, a service spokesman in Washington. Both of those being investigated are ICBM launch officers with responsibility for operating intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The launch officers' access to classified information has been suspended, and they have been prohibited from serving on missile launch control duty while the Air Force is investigating, another defense official said. That official provided no further details and spoke only on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

At the Wyoming nuclear missile base, Hagel addressed officers and airmen after a series of security lapses and discipline problems that were revealed in Associated Press news stories in 2013. Officials have said the service members are increasingly tired of working in what can seem like oblivion. They win no battles, earn no combat pay and only rarely are given public credit of any kind.

Why would it boost sagging morale to have a flaming Communist Obamanoid pay you a visit?

Nothing like a guy who has such high regard for the US military to cheer the troops.

This headline is misleading. Nuking a missile base would be pretty big news, especially if done by the SecDef.

So glad I was Navy from 1975-1986, before all this PC shit came about. Even then, women on tenders/oilers were complaining about the men sailors just looking at them.

To this day, I remember being in line for the shore boat as our all male Frigate (combat ship) was outside of a Tender (multi-sex) for the sh*thole Diego Garcia. A male sailor said your "pretty" to a female on the Tender as she passed by. She went and complained and a female Chief Petty Officer took him out of line and I never saw him again on our ship.

Can't imagine what it's like now. I often wonder what happens when male/female sailors are passing each other in the narrow passageways and just brush against each other by accident. Anyone who has spent time on a Navy ship, knows there is no avoiding it. While all sailors try to give each other room while moving about, there is just not enough room in the passageways to avoid it. It happens no matter the ship size.

Now, they want to put females on submarines where there is NO chance of not touching each other in their every day duties. I once took a tour of an attack sub and surprised that anyone would volunteer for such duty. Yes, Tridents are larger, but still have narrow passageways.

Our military is a mess due to political correctness. As if the Marines, Army, and ground units of the Navy and Air Force don't have enough to deal with in combat situations. Now, they need special training so as not to get harassed by their female counter-parts. Pfft.

Last thought: Does anyone here know how many female sailors get pregnant before or during a deployment or whine about women problems just to get off ship? It happened frequently in my day when they were assigned to support ships only, and suspect it is now more prevalent.

Poor babies. They go home every off duty night to their families in superior Air Force housing. Boohoo.

Let's re-assign them to ground combat controller units in war zones. They want "public credit", then they can be the female AF ground controller badass with her ground laser spotter as in the movie, "Battle: Los Angeles".

Really? They are complaining about boredom when so many Marines, Army and other ground combat types come back with missing limbs and disfigured, not to mention DEAD? What a bunch of pussies. Screw you AF computer geeks.

I served (and excelled) in ICBM operations back in the days of Strategic Air Command (SAC) at F. E. Warren. Same whining heard today as (now) 30 years ago.

Funny you should say that. Most people in top management have no idea how the troops see them. I worked at an $80 million a year facility. Every morning the Contracts VP, a former trail lawyer, would take his coffee cup and wander around the production floor and interrupt working employees with inane questions like “what do you do here?” After I saw numerous employees imitating his walk and the peculiar way he held his coffee cup I asked him why he did this. He smiled and in all sincerity said, “It’s important to let the little people see you and feel that you’re interested in them.” He continued doing this until the facility closed due in large part to his incompetence.

Yeah, Blast those USAF types. Pampered and everything. Like those SAR members in England. Nice housing, good pay, nice and safe. Wait....those men died.
Or tell the USAF family members who had their loved one deployed to some shit box for 18 months about their housing. Pipes freeze when its cold, and the furnaces cant keep up with the low temps.
Save your hatred for those who deserve it: The Liberals who are sinking the Military and who might as well take a AK 47 and shoot the servicemen themselves.

Yeah. When I was still in college I spent one summer working at Youngstown Sheet & Tube in East Chicago, not long before it folded. I recognize the management type.
