MOSCOW Having just quieted the furor over its seizure of a Greenpeace International ship in the Arctic, Russia is embroiled in a new dispute with the environmental organization, this time over a Russian fishing trawler accused of poaching in coastal waters off Senegal.
The Oleg Naydenov, a Russian-owned fishing boat, was seized by the Senegalese military on Saturday and taken to the port of Dakar, accused of trawling in the countrys exclusive economic zone.
Senegals Fishing Ministry has demanded more than $800,000 in fines, while the Russian government has called for a diplomatic resolution to the standoff.
Greenpeace has taken an outsize position in the dispute, said Aleksandr A. Savelyev, a representative of the Russian fishing agency, and its actions have a clearly mercenary character.
I am far from the thought that this is some kind of crude revenge for the Arctic Sunrises actions that led to the arrest of the activists for their protest in the Arctic, Mr. Savelyev said in a telephone interview. But I will say that Greenpeaces actions are reminiscent of a woman of little social responsibility who can be used by any person of means.

That’s a turn of phrase that needs to be stolen and reused. Just replace the ellipses with the name of any of your ‘favourite’ politicians.
This is analogous to a local sheriff seizing one of Al Capone’s alcohol shipments circa 1925. That sheriff had better look out. Run the ship off, okay. Seize it, stupid.
Greenpeace taking on Russia? Good luck with that, wackos.
- Greenpeace & Sea Shepherd are international pirates and extortionists; they should be treated as such
how would Greenpeace have any standing in this dispute?
Putin should have kept those climatards locked up.
Send a few warships down there to put Senegal in it’s place. Too many African countries are run by pirates. The rest of the world should just clean them out like we did in the 19th century.
I’m surprised Greece Peace actually seem to run Senegal, with enough authority to seize ships belonging to a superpower. How many child soldiers and blood diamonds did that influence cost.
The problem is that other countries have cleaned out many of the weaker African countries. When the central government of Somalia collapsed fishing boats from Philippines, China, Russia, etc rushed in and filled their hulls with fish from Somali territorial waters. The Somali fisherman had little choice but turn to piracy or starve.
I don't know if that is the case here but I wouldn't rush to judgment on whose right or wrong. The fact that you have Russian fishing ships off the coast of Africa tells you how competitive commercial fishing is.
The government of Senegal had better watch its rear end. If Putin acts in the typical Russian manner, there are already some extremely dangerous killers heading in the direction of Senegal. And if he gives them the go ahead, the Senegalese are going to get some “ouchy places”.
And second time is a charm with Greenpeace. Apparently they did not learn their lesson, with the Russians playing extra nice. They only offer that opportunity once.
Send in the Peter the Great and a strike force, Seize the port, resuce the ship and sink their squat navy if it tries anything. OR threaten to blast their capital with a single nuke if they fail to return the ship and crew—and pay Russia for the price of sending the Flotilla!
keelhaul the subhuman creeps
